Take a look at this chart. The 2006 housing bubble peaked at approximately 266. If you think today’s market is safe, you’re overlooking the warning signs of structural stagnation. Buying property in 2026 could be a trap. Here’s why: Redfin data reveals a huge imbalance: sellers outnumber buyers by 62.6%. Buyer demand has dropped to its lowest level since 2013. This isn’t just a typical market slowdown. It’s a complete breakdown in market momentum. Most homeowners are locked into mortgages with rates near 3%. With 30-year fixed mortgage rates hovering around 7.3%, moving has become financially painful. Price discovery is stalled because homeowners can’t afford to move. You’re purchasing an illiquid asset at an asking price that hasn’t been validated by sufficient real transaction volume. Buying today means committing to enormous monthly payments for an asset with limited upside potential. If you borrow five times your equity to purchase a home at 7.3% interest and prices remain flat, you’re not building wealth. You’re destroying capital.
