Every Friday, I wear red. For many people, Red Friday is a simple gesture of support for our deployed military. For me, it is something much deeper. It is a reminder. A memory. A promise. Years ago, my fiancé deployed to Iraq. He was part of the mission searching for SCUD missiles. Like so many brave men and women who answer the call of duty, he willingly put himself in harm’s way to protect others and serve his country. He never came home the way we prayed he would. Instead of running into my arms, he came home draped in the American flag, carried in a coffin. That is why Red Friday hits a little differently for me. Every Friday, I think about the dreams we never got to share, the life we never got to build, and the future that was taken from us far too soon. There will always be a place in my heart that belongs to him. But while he did not return to his earthly home, I find comfort knowing he reached his eternal home. Heaven became his final destination, where pain, war, and sacrifice no longer exist. Because of him, I understand the true meaning behind the words “Remember Everyone Deployed.” I know firsthand that every deployed service member is someone’s child, spouse, fiancé, parent, sibling, or best friend. Behind every uniform is a family waiting, hoping, praying, and counting the days until they come home. So every Friday, I wear red not only for the deployed but also for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I wear red for the families carrying invisible wounds. I wear red for the empty chairs at dinner tables and the memories that never fade. Most of all, I pray. I pray daily for the safe return of every man and woman serving far from home. I pray that they return safely to the arms of those who love them. I pray that more families receive homecomings instead of heartbreak. And until they all come home, I will continue to wear red. For the deployed. For the fallen. For my fiancé. For every hero who answered the call. Until they all come home.

Sloth update: She’s drowning. She is not talking to me I assume because I told my boss I was sick of all her giggling & “talking about that damn beta fish” I hear her asking the legal secretary questions she can’t answer. She already has one bad report from the office manager to the staffing agency, apparently she’s getting a second one because of the wrong documents she sent out but I guarantee you they will keep her. My office mate sent out a meditation notice & all counsel showed up here but the mediation was in Baton Rouge 😭😭

A different kind of Louisiana ghost story. LOUISIANA’S GHOSTS, THE HAUNTING OF AUGUST 2005 When writing about Louisiana’s ghosts, the most haunting story isn’t a phantom in the bayou, it’s August 2005. Hurricane Katrina didn’t just break the levees; it cracked open the myth that anyone was coming to save the people of NOLA. Over 1,800 American souls perished. 80% of New Orleans submerged under a toxic, chemical stew of sewage and over 8 million gallons of spilled oil from ruptured refineries and tanks, turning the floodwaters black and combustible while families were forced into sweltering attics, chopping through roofs with hatchets just to breathe. The disaster was the catastrophic collapse of every tier of government: The Federal Failure & George W. Bush: While citizens died on overpasses waving American flags, Bush observed from Air Force One at 30,000 feet, praising FEMA’s Michael Brown with “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job” while federal paralysis blocked aid and left a major American city to drown. State Paralysis under Gov. Kathleen Blanco: Bureaucratic gridlock between Baton Rouge and Washington stalled troop deployments and relief while people dehydrated in plain sight. Decisions arrived days too late. Cruelty to Pets: Officials strictly forced evacuees to abandon their pets at gunpoint before boarding rescue buses and helicopters leading to the heartbreaking, preventable deaths of an estimated 250,000 dogs and cats stranded to starve or drown, traumatizing owners who were forced to let go of their companions. The Tragedy of Dr. Anna Pou at Memorial Hospital: Stranded without power, running water, or backup generators in 110-degree suffocating heat, Memorial Medical Center became an isolated tomb as rescue boats drove past. Inside Memorial, the nightmare extended far beyond the hospital’s failing infrastructure. Patients who depended on medical equipment, oxygen, medications, and constant care suddenly found themselves trapped in a building where the systems keeping them alive were collapsing. Elevators stopped working. Temperatures climbed. Darkness, dehydration, exhaustion, and the stench of a building without functioning sanitation engulfed the hospital. Doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel were forced to make agonizing decisions while caring for critically ill patients in conditions no hospital should ever have to endure. With evacuation delayed, the most vulnerable patients faced the terrifying reality that their medical needs could no longer be met. Pushed into battlefield-triage conditions with critical, dying patients, staff made agonizing choices in an impossible abyss. And then came the ultimate betrayal. The very government that failed to protect Memorial Hospital, failed to provide the resources necessary to evacuate its patients, and abandoned Dr. Anna Pou and her medical colleagues in an unimaginable nightmare turned around and attempted to prosecute the very people it had failed. Instead of acknowledging the catastrophic government failures that left patients and caregivers trapped in those conditions, the state arrested and attempted to convict Dr. Anna Pou of second-degree murder, trying to scapegoat a physician who had been abandoned by the very system responsible for protecting her patients. A grand jury rightfully refused to indict her. Katrina proved that Louisiana’s deepest horror wasn’t just nature. It was watching the world’s wealthiest nation abandon its people to oil-slicked waters, criminalize the caregivers left behind, and choose bureaucratic neglect over human life. We didn’t just lose a city. We lost our faith. Never forget the names painted on those roofs.

It’s 52 with a high of 78 today. Is it too cool to send the kids to school in shorts today? I don’t trust my judgment but they are wearing different outfits all week for Halloween & we only have shorts for today that match the colors. Opinions please 🙏🏼
