DC’s National Guard deployment cost $89.9 million in 30 days but produced just $6.45 million in estimated social benefits. Military deployments are an expensive way to fight crime, writes Cato’s @jeffreyamiron.

Federal agents should need a warrant to see where you’ve driven and a criminal conviction to take your property. Both reforms have bipartisan support, and the new Congress should pass them, writes Cato’s Matthew Cavedon.

RT @adamnmichel: Senator Scott is right. There's not enough money at the top to close the deficit, let alone pay for trillions of dollars of new spending. Big government is expensive, and the only way to pay for it is with high taxes on everyone. At least be honest with people.
    Rick Scott @SenRickScott
Democrats want to tax the rich to pay for their socialist agenda. Will it work? The total wealth of every U.S. billionaire combined is about $7 trillion. Forget taxes…if the government could magically seize all that wealth at its current value, it would only pay for 20% of Medicare for All. There are two ways for Dems to pay for their agenda: significantly raise taxes for EVERY SINGLE WORKING AMERICAN or massively increase the debt which will cause more inflation and hike interest rates. The only way to lower prices is LESS GOVERNMENT.

Congress taxed incomes without knowing how that would wreck health care. That mistake continues to increase prices and premiums, create gaps in access to care, and suppress wages and economic dynamism, says Cato’s @mfcannon. Watch the Cato Podcast:

Those who spend other people’s money have little reason to guard it. Rewards for fraud tips can’t fix that. Prevent improper payments and give states a financial stake in federal programs they run, writes Cato’s @RominaBoccia.

RT @CatoInstitute: Shipping fertilizer ingredients to Louisiana from Peru can cost nearly half as much as shipping them from Florida. The same happens with other products. Cato’s @cpgrabow explains how the Jones Act drives up the cost of moving American goods between American ports.

Data center bans would crush economic growth, says Cato's @ts_fisher. A better way to prevent higher utility bills is to make data centers pay the full cost of their electricity infrastructure or allow them to build new, private grids.

Who are "the rich" in America? Most people picture tech billionaires. But there's 3 million private business owners worth at least $5 million across the country, from gutter manufacturers to hot dog restaurant owners. Together they hold 13 times the wealth of the Forbes 400. Economists Eric Zwick and @omzidar join "The Economics of It" to explain how these “Main Street Millionaires” got rich, and what it shows about American capitalism. Links in replies.
