ELLIOTT WAVE PRO | Day 8: Wave 3 Projection Math, How to Know If You Are Inside an Extension
Wave 3 is where the real money is made, and also where most traders leave it on the table. They take profit at 1.618 because a textbook told them to, then watch price keep running without them. Or they hold on, convinced a weak rally is a monster wave 3, and give everything back. The difference comes down to one question: is this wave 3 extending, or not?
What the Traditional Says:
▶️ Wave 3 is often 1.618 times the length of wave 1
▶️ Wave 3 is never the shortest wave
▶️ Wave 3 is usually the strongest and longest wave
▶️ Set your target at 1.618 and you are done
What Really Happens in Crypto:
▶️ 1.618 is only the first serious target, not the final one. In strong crypto trends, wave 3 regularly stretches to 2.618 and sometimes beyond
▶️ An extended wave 3 can be spotted while it is forming, not only in hindsight. The internal structure gives it away
▶️ Wave 3 extension changes the whole trade plan. It affects where wave 4 should end and how far wave 5 is likely to go
▶️ Not every strong rally is a wave 3. Sometimes it is a wave C that looks powerful but stops near equality with wave A
The Wave 3 Target Ladder:
All measured as a multiple of wave 1, projected from the wave 2 low:
➡️ 1.0: minimum expectation. A wave 3 that cannot reach this is suspect
➡️ 1.618: the standard target and first major decision point
➡️ 2.618: the extended target. Common in crypto when momentum is strong
➡️ 4.236: rare, but it appears in parabolic crypto trends, especially in altcoins
Five Signs You Are Inside an Extension:
➡️ The 1-2, 1-2 setup: after wave 1 and wave 2, price prints a smaller wave 1 and wave 2 inside wave 3. These nested first and second waves are the launch pad for the most powerful part of the move
➡️ The channel break: draw a line from the start of wave 1 to the end of wave 2, then a parallel line through the top of wave 1. An extending wave 3 usually breaks clearly above that upper line
➡️ Shallow internal pullbacks: corrections inside wave 3 stay small, often only 23.6 to 38.2 percent. Buyers are not letting price come back
➡️ Momentum peak: RSI and momentum often make their highest reading of the whole impulse inside wave 3, especially in the middle section, wave 3 of 3
➡️ Gaps and imbalances: price leaves fair value gaps that do not get filled quickly. In SMC terms, displacement after displacement
The Math: A Worked Wave 3 Projection.
Example altcoin on the daily chart:
➡️ Wave 1: $1.00 to $1.40. Length $0.40
➡️ Wave 2 low: $1.15
Wave 3 target ladder from $1.15:
➡️ 1.0 x wave 1: $1.55
➡️ 1.618 x wave 1: about $1.80
➡️ 2.618 x wave 1: about $2.20
➡️ 4.236 x wave 1: about $2.84
Now look inside wave 3:
➡️ Sub-wave (i) of 3: $1.15 to $1.35. Length $0.20
➡️ Sub-wave (ii) of 3 pulls back to $1.25
➡️ Sub-wave (iii) of 3 projection: 1.618 x $0.20 from $1.25 = about $1.57
If sub-wave (iii) alone pushes beyond $1.57 with strong momentum, the larger wave 3 is behaving like an extension. That shifts focus from $1.80 to the $2.20 area.
What Extension Means for Wave 5:
▶️ When wave 3 extends, wave 5 often ends up closer in size to wave 1. That is the equality guideline
▶️ When wave 3 is not extended, staying near 1.0 to 1.618, watch for wave 5 to be the extended wave instead. In crypto, that often becomes a speculative blow-off, as covered on Day 5
▶️ Knowing whether wave 3 extended tells you how aggressive to be in wave 5
Real Example: Bitcoin 2023 to 2024
One way to map that advance:
▶️ November 2022: BTC bottomed near $15,500
▶️ July 2023: the first leg up topped near $31,800. Wave 1 length roughly $16,300
▶️ September 2023: pullback to near $24,900. Wave 2
▶️ 1.618 target from there: about $51,300. 2.618 target: about $67,600
▶️ January 2024: spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the US. Big news arrived in the middle of the move, exactly the wave 3 psychology from Day 5
▶️ BTC passed the 1.618 target in February 2024 and kept going
▶️ March 2024: BTC topped near $73,800, roughly 3 times the length of wave 1, beyond even the 2.618 target
▶️ A trader who sold everything at 1.618 caught about half the move. A trader who saw the extension signs and held a runner caught the rest
▶️ What came after this top is one of the most debated stretches in Bitcoin's history. That belongs to the case files in Module 8
Wave 3 or Wave C? The Trap:
▶️ The most expensive mistake in this lesson: treating a wave C rally as a wave 3
▶️ Wave C often stops near 1.0 or 1.618 of wave A, then reverses hard
▶️ Clues it may be C, not 3: momentum fades instead of peaking, the internal structure is overlapping and choppy, and the move started after a three-wave decline instead of a five-wave one
▶️ Selling too early: closing an extended wave 3 at 1.618 because "the textbook target was hit"
▶️ Fighting strength: shorting wave 3 because RSI says overbought. In an extension, RSI can stay overbought for weeks
▶️ Degree confusion: calling the top of sub-wave (iii) the end of the whole wave 3, then selling right before the rest of the move
Trade Setup: Wave 3 of 3 Entry:
➡️ Count: wave 1 and wave 2 complete. Inside wave 3, sub-wave (i) complete and sub-wave (ii) pulling back
➡️ Entry: when sub-wave (ii) holds above the wave 2 low and price breaks above the sub-wave (i) high
➡️ Stop loss: below the sub-wave (ii) low. Full structural invalidation sits below the start of wave 1
➡️ TP1: 1.618 x wave 1 from the wave 2 low. Close part of the position here
➡️ TP2: 2.618 x wave 1, held only if the extension signs are present
➡️ Runner: trail the stop below each completed internal fourth wave instead of using a fixed target
➡️ Exit warning: momentum divergence at a new high plus a clear five-wave internal count suggests wave 3 is done and wave 4 is starting
Lesson for my CryptoPatel Family 👉
👉 1.618 is a decision point, not an automatic exit. In crypto, wave 3 often goes much further
👉 Look for the 1-2, 1-2 setup, the channel break, shallow pullbacks, peak momentum and unfilled gaps. Those are the fingerprints of an extension
👉 Take partial profit at 1.618, then let a runner work with a trailing stop
👉 If wave 3 extends, expect a more modest wave 5. If it does not, be ready for wave 5 to extend
👉 A rally after a three-wave decline is more likely a C wave than a 3. Do not pay wave 3 prices for a wave C move
Wave 3 is the part of the trend where the crowd finally agrees with the early buyers. That agreement does not stop at a neat textbook number. Learn to read the internal structure, and you will stop guessing where wave 3 ends and start watching it tell you, one sub-wave at a time.
