He saw the suspect moving toward or entering the building, followed him inside, and fatally shot him in a special education room before police arrived. The first 911 call came in at 12:59 p.m. The school went into lockdown at 1:01 p.m. Officers confirmed the suspect was dead, cleared the building, and began treating the wounded. The gunman, identified as John J. Griffin, 16, forced entry by shooting through locked doors with a shotgun. He killed three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and one teacher. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured. The suspect’s death brought the total dead to five. Police have not released the victims’ names.
