RT @PeteThamel: Strong story by @DanMurphyESPN on the obstacles facing the Protect College Sports Act in the House. *Employment and realignment loom large. Along with a "grab bag of random things" like scheduling/season length that may not fall under federal purview *Timing and Ted Cruz "fan fiction" of house returning to vote before election. *The Congressional Black Caucus remains opposed and says "the bill's authors haven't been willing to engage in serious conversations."

I think a lot of folks are misunderstanding the argument for the Cory Booker amendment. It's less "Players are being treated unfairly!" (which is true in principle, but currently the players are doing OK for the themselves.)

The arms race is not fueled by player payments. Schools had been spending like drunken sailors on coaches, facilities and more for at least a decade before players starting making money. Booker's point is that capping ONLY players is illogical. It's not going to fix the problem.

It's a fundamental misread of college sports economics -- which is understandable for lawmakers who aren't spending every day in that industry. For the industry's powerbrokers pushing this bill, it's intentionally deceitful and revealing.

Story on tonight's Senate vote to pass the Protect College Sports Act. A couple major steps still remain if it's going to reach a finish line.

An amendment to the PCSA that would've capped coaches' pay at $5 million, limited how many times they can change jobs and capped buyout fees just got 47 votes on the Senate floor. It failed, but that's a lot of support for something many college sports folks saw as laughable.

The Senate is scheduled to vote this evening on the Protect College Sports Act. If pass (as expected) it will almost certainly be a lame duck issue for the House. It is very, very unlikely the House returns from campaigning to vote on a college sports bill.

We’ve heard a lot of bold claims about the current state of the NCAA in the past week. We tried to add some context to the current reality for the college sports and how a new federal law would impact them.

So, 6 years from now, when the proposed $50 million salary cap has fully separated the top few dozen spenders from everyone else in college football and TV rights deals are expiring, there will be nothing stopping B1G and SEC from grabbing more teams and only playing each other?

Big change to college sports bill: Schools that want to change conferences only need to be independent for three years, down from five years, according to Sen. Britt. And the sitting out period sunsets totally after six years Britt says she’s “thrilled” the change has been included

If I were crafting a piece of legislation that will cement the future of an exclusive CFB super league, it would look a lot like the PCSA. If you're interested in games like Western Michigan v. Michigan, the not-so-distant future seems bleak.

This bill, ostensibly designed to encourage financial responsibility, could create a mad rush for a few dozen schools to spend well beyond their means for the next 6 years so they can be playing well enough then to get an invite to the next megaconference.

The athlete featured here is on a volleyball team that launched in 2021 based on a strategy that contradicts the widespread fear-mongering that sports will inevitably be cut and the idea that college sports are bankrupting colleges. Read more about it:

This links to an ad where the player says his team could be cut. FDU explicitly added the team because it helped add to the school's overall revenue. FDU, which doesn't pay players directly or have a football team, has no reason to cut teams due to un-capped player payments.

Sen. Maria Cantwell, speaking now in D.C., says the Protect College Sports Act is "about reining in runaway costs in ...sports spending." The latest version of the PCSA will double the amount of money schools can directly pay their players.

Sen. John Hickenlooper says 415 college teams have been cut in "the last couple years." Since athletes started making money, the number of D1 teams has increased by more than 100. There certainly haven't been 400 teams cut. I think this is a typo that became a talking point.

The only mention of 415 cuts I can find online is from a website called University HQ, which cites a FOS article that doesn't mention anything about 415 teams. There was a Bloomberg story around the same time that says 41 D1 Olympic teams were cut last year.
