Government has broken ground on the €342.6 million Karuma–Tororo 400kV transmission project, which will strengthen electricity supply to Eastern Uganda and Greater Kampala, support industrialisation and expand regional power trade.
The project involves approximately 347 kilometres of transmission lines traversing 15 districts, alongside associated substations.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Hon. Dr Monica Musenero said the project will provide critical infrastructure to support industries, create jobs and accelerate Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
She urged contractors and engineers to commence work promptly, deliver quality infrastructure within the planned 36 months and ensure that the project benefits Ugandans. She also called on local suppliers to participate and communities along the route to protect the infrastructure against vandalism.
UETCL Board Chairperson Kwame Ejalu said the project complements Uganda’s investments in electricity generation, including the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant, by strengthening the transmission network needed to deliver reliable power to homes, businesses and industries.
He emphasised accountability, value for money, quality workmanship and fair compensation for project-affected persons.
The Ambassador of Sweden to Uganda, H.E. Anna Maria, reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to Uganda’s energy development, highlighting the longstanding partnership involving Swedish companies, financing institutions and the Government of Uganda.
She noted that the project would strengthen electricity transmission, support investment and create opportunities for regional power trade.
The project aligns with Government’s industrialisation agenda and long-term development plans, with reliable electricity expected to support business growth, employment creation and improved livelihoods.
