In Upper Burrell, TECfusions is converting the Alcoa Technical Center into a hyperscale data center that could use up to 3 GW of power. Anyone can comment on its air quality permit. Email nwaryanka@pa.gov at the PA DEP by November 2 and cite permit 65-01147. Funding provided by The Pittsburgh Foundation (@PittsburghFdn).

In Shippingport in Beaver County, a 2 GW hyperscale data center is being developed on the site of the former Bruce Mansfield coal power plant. To get involved, follow @bcmac_:

Ohio’s oil and gas well database runs on Microsoft Access. It needs paid software, and it has outgrown Access’s 2 GB limit, so it’s split across two files. Ohioans shouldn’t need a software license to find out whether the well next door was inspected.

Wastewater from the Redbird #4 injection well flooded 28 conventional production wells in Ohio, some as far as five miles away. It didn’t result in a violation. The operator made voluntary changes and resumed.

In @MariettaTimes: the Kris-Mar 1 well in Washington County started leaking brine in 2023, and ODNR's incident record lists the amount released as zero. Bev Reed of @BuckeyeEnviNtwk: "The well was flowing for days after the leak was found."

The former Cheswick Generating Station coal plant site in Springdale is being converted into a hyperscale data center. The county's comment period is open to anyone, wherever you live. Comment here:

Over the summer of 2026, we researched twelve data centers in Southwestern PA. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state used in 2024.

ODNR’s oil and gas division can’t fine operators directly. It has to ask the attorney general to sue. We’re not aware of a single case of ODNR doing that for injection-well violations.

Over the summer of 2026, our four interns researched 12 data center proposals across six Southwestern PA counties. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state of Pennsylvania used in 2024.

Of the 2,373 Ohio oil and gas incident records with a quantity filled in, 797 say “unknown” or “unable to quantify.” That’s one in three. It’s hard to hold anyone to account for a spill nobody measured.
