Insurance is a “Bad Deal” When you buy insurance, you are statistically likely to lose money. You’re either unlikely to file a claim or receive benefits for less than you paid in premiums. Put differently, insurance is not a good deal in a mathematical sense. But that’s not why we buy insurance. We don’t purchase it to come out ahead against the insurance company. Instead, we buy it to guard against risks that could derail our long-term financial plans.

Put all your insurance on auto pay. I worked with someone who didn't have auto pay on their disability insurance, and then got disabled. 😭

RT @JonLuskin: As a financial planner, I ask the households I work with to send me a lot of information. Sometimes, they do. Sometimes they don’t. Oftentimes, it’s somewhere in between. For example, sometimes I’ll get a pay stub – but not necessarily an employer benefit guidebook. That paystub alone can tell me a lot—especially if I’m missing that employer benefit guidebook.   With a paystub, I can figure out if they're or their employer is paying for:   -cheap disability insurance (where an individual policy should likely be purchased)   -accidental death and dismemberment (generally, a waste of money)  -legal benefit assistance package (sometimes, a great way to get estate planning done cost-effectively)  -child life insurance (also, generally a waste of money)  From there, I can provide guidance on the above.  If you’re looking to learn more about my process, check out the 2025 Financial Planning Template for Advisors – link in the comments 👇

RT @JonLuskin: I put a value on simplicity. For example, my 529 is at Schwab – not because they offer the lowest cost 529. (They don’t.) All my other money is at Schwab. I want as few accounts (logins) as possible. That means paying a few more basis points for added simplicity.

“Buy the dip” isn’t a guaranteed strategy. The bottom of the next dip could still be higher than today’s price. That’s why #investing should be based on your goals, not market timing. If you’ve got cash earmarked for long-term growth, waiting on the sidelines usually doesn’t make sense. The odds are in your favor if you invest and let time in the market do the work. #investing

Use Autopay, Especially for Insurance With life, we get busy. Nowadays, I couldn’t imagine having to set aside mental bandwidth to remember to pay every bill. For me, I put practically every bill on autopay, including insurance. Moreover, using a bank account for autopay, while it forfeits some credit card point optimization, doesn’t carry the risk of your credit card expiring, subsequently causing a missed insurance payment. Yes, sharing your bank account number carries some risk, with the worst-case scenario being hackers accessing a checking account. That can be inconvenient. Yet, that inconvenience won’t make or break your retirement plan. The opposite is true if you don't pay the right insurance bill on time.
