RT @mspnorthernmi: Yesterday, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Michigan State Police (MSP) in locating an inmate who escaped from the Crawford County Jail. MSP helicopter “Trooper 3” used its forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera to locate the suspect hiding beneath logs and debris in the woods near the Grayling Country Club. The aerial team guided troopers and officers on the ground to the suspect’s location, where he was safely taken into custody. MSP resources involved in the search included the Aviation Unit, Canine Unit, Emergency Support Team, Houghton Lake Post, Gaylord Post, Traverse City Post, Seventh District Fugitive Team, and STING detectives. Great work by all who worked together to safely take the suspect into custody.

Delta County, Michigan. After several months of investigation, the Michigan State Police (MSP) has arrested a subject who scammed an Escanaba resident out of over a half million dollars. In July 2026, the MSP Gladstone Post opened an investigation into a reported scam. An Escanaba man had reportedly been in conversation with the suspect who posed as a crypto currency investor. The man had thought he was investing in Bitcoin. On one occasion he met with the suspect and gave the suspect over $500,000 in U.S. currency. After that, an additional $165,000 in cash was mailed via FedEx to addresses out of state. In total, approximately $665,000 in U.S. currency had been given or sent by the victim. The suspect was not a legitimate investor or broker but rather was alleged to be a scammer. The investigation identified the suspect as 34-year-old Zhong Jiang who had resided in Orland Hills, Illinois. The suspect was alleged to have committed similar crimes out of state and had suspected connections to organized crime. The case was sent to the Delta County Prosecutor for review who issued a felony arrest warrant. MSP extradited Jiang from Waukesha, Wisconsin where Jiang was being held in jail on similar charges for alleged crimes committed in Wisconsin. Jiang was lodged in the Delta County Jail. On October 19, 2026, Jiang was arraigned in the 94th District Court on one count of Larceny by Conversion $100,000 or More. Bond was set at $400,000 cash/surety and the case is due in court again on October 29, 2026. The defendant is considered innocent unless proven guilty. MSP was assisted by the Delta County Prosecutor’s Office, Escanaba Public Safety, Homeland Security Investigations, Delafield (WI) Police Department, Waukesha County (WI) Sheriff’s Office, and the Internal Revenue Service. “This was great work by the detectives and troopers, along with everyone who assisted on this case,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer. “Unfortunately, scams like this can happen anywhere and anyone can be targeted. If you’re unsure if something is legitimate, contact your local law enforcement before sending money. We’re happy to talk with you, answer your questions, and try to help prevent something like this from happening to you.”

A strong gust of wind caused a canoe trailer to tip over on the Mackinac Bridge, but thanks to quick thinking and teamwork, everyone made it safely across. On October 17, 2026, at about 11:12 p.m., a Michigan State Police trooper from the St. Ignace Post responded to a trailer that had tipped over while crossing the Mackinac Bridge. The trailer was being pulled by a pickup truck and was carrying eight canoes. A gust of wind caused the trailer to tip over and come to rest against the bridge railing on the northbound lanes. The trooper helped keep the driver and his dog safe and warm inside the patrol car while waiting for more help to arrive. George’s Towing from St. Ignace responded and was able to pull the trailer back onto the road and upright again, without losing a single canoe. Once upright, the goal was then to get everyone to the north side of the bridge safely. To help keep the trailer from tipping over again, the tow truck stayed attached while the trooper escorted everyone to the north side of the bridge. Thanks to the teamwork, everyone made it safely across with all eight canoes.

Update: It was initially believed the trailer carried eight canoes, but it has been clarified that there had originally been nine. Before the trooper had arrived on scene, one canoe had reportedly blown off the trailer. Nice job by George’s Towing in getting the trailer upright and saving the remaining canoes.

Upper Peninsula, Michigan. A sergeant from the Michigan State Police (MSP) St. Ignace Post has received a statewide award for his work as a negotiator. Sgt. Jacob Hubbard’s actions during a high-risk incident demonstrate the important role negotiators play in helping law enforcement resolve dangerous situations and protect lives. Sgt. Hubbard was presented with the 2026 Michigan Association of Hostage Negotiator's “Negotiator of the Year” award for his role in helping bring a dangerous situation to a safe resolution in Marquette County in January 2026. While there were other candidates who demonstrated excellent work as well, Sgt. Hubbard was the unanimous winner. In addition to his full-time duties as a sergeant at the St. Ignace Post, Sgt. Hubbard serves as a negotiator with the MSP Emergency Support (ES) Team. The ES Team specializes in responding to dangerous and critical incidents. The team provides specialized training and equipment for situations involving hostage rescue, armed and barricaded suspects, high risk arrests, and more. The team includes tactical and negotiation units that work together to resolve these incidents safely. In Marquette County on January 3, 2026, at approximately 8:50 p.m., a neighbor of Kyle Beauchemin reported that one of Beauchemin’s dogs had attacked the neighbor’s livestock. Deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and an MSP trooper from the Negaunee Post attempted to contact Beauchemin at his home but received no answer. At about 9:50 p.m., MCSO deputies and MSP troopers were dispatched to the home again for a reported domestic violence incident. Reports indicated that Beauchemin was inside with his girlfriend and their four children, who were being held against their will. An estimated 28 pitbull mix dogs were also in and around the home. MCSO deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Beauchemin. The MSP ES Team was called to assist in the early morning hours of January 4th, because of the dangerous circumstances of the suspect being armed and holding hostages. Sgt. Hubbard was able to contact Beauchemin’s girlfriend. She expressed fear for her safety and the safety of the children. Beauchemin was reportedly armed with firearms. Sgt. Hubbard was able to make contact with Beauchemin and negotiated with him for several hours. Although Beauchemin agreed several times to leave the cabin peacefully, he did not follow through. Sgt. Hubbard was able to keep him on the phone and continued working to resolve the situation without further harm being done. Eventually, a decision was made to enter the cabin. During the planning process, Sgt. Hubbard provided the tactical team with a detailed description of the cabin and information about the location of the firearms. As the team entered, Beauchemin used his girlfriend and the children as human shields. Sgt. Hubbard relayed information about Beauchemin’s movements to the tactical team in real time, helping the other ES team members respond accordingly. Beauchemin was taken into custody, and all five hostages were rescued safely. He was lodged in the Marquette County Jail, and the investigation was turned over to the MCSO, the lead investigating agency. Sgt. Hubbard’s work during several hours of negotiations helped keep the situation from escalating. He also provided critical information that helped the tactical team plan and carry out the operation. The safe resolution of this incident was the result of teamwork and coordination among multiple agencies. Sgt. Hubbard and the entire MSP ES Team worked alongside the MCSO, MSP Negaunee Post troopers, Marquette County Central Dispatch, and MSP Negaunee Regional Communication’s Center.

Wildlife is more active this time of year, especially at dawn and dusk. If an animal runs into the road, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can lead to a more serious crash, like hitting a tree, guardrail, or oncoming traffic.
