I asked Doug Ford to recall the legislature so Ontario can fight back against Donald Trump’s tariffs. He called that “gutter politics.” Here is my response:

Why is every dollar of Ontario's new classroom supply fund locked into an American-owned chain, in the middle of a trade war, when Canadian retailers are right there? The Premier must cancel the Staples deal today. And then he must recall the legislature so we can pass emergency tariff relief now.

Cleveland-Cliffs’ CEO just admitted it: they bought Stelco in bad faith to kill Canadian competition, and Ontario steelworkers are paying with their futures. Ontario can’t stand on the sidelines. Ford and Carney must bring Stelco under public ownership and protect these jobs.

Cleveland-Cliffs CEO: I bought Stelco because I could not afford anymore having Stelco flooding the market here in the United States to the detriment of my own company. David Cochrane: Am I understanding you correctly there? It was a defensive acquisition?

Ask anyone who voted for Doug Ford in 2018: this isn’t the guy they voted for. Why? Because he and his ministers got a taste of the sweet life, with private jets and luxury hotel rooms on your dime. So why are you paying for this government’s luxury lifestyle?

We’re back at Queen’s Park. Doug Ford took 21 weeks off from the legislature. I spent that time in communities from Scarborough to Thunder Bay, and I heard one thing loud and clear: life is getting too expensive. Now Ford has a choice. He can show up for the people of Ontario, or keep helping himself and his insiders. We’re here to lower your costs and put money back in your pocket.

Congratulations to Mayor Olivia Chow on a decisive win last night, and to all the progressive councillors heading to city hall with her. Toronto voted for a more affordable, caring city. A lot of what Olivia ran on is stuff we’ve been building support for at Queen’s Park, like banning surveillance pricing so your grocery bill isn’t set by how much a company knows about you. Voters backed a plan built around what people are dealing with every day, starting with the cost of living. That’s exactly what I’m fighting for at Queen’s Park – to lower your costs, get your money back from Doug Ford’s friends, and put money back in your pocket. Huge thanks to the hundreds of New Democrats who knocked doors and made calls to get this done. What a night, Toronto!

This is great news for five star hotels, but terrible news for taxpayers. Doug Ford can’t help himself from wasting your money. Stan’s new $22,501 salary bump is going to come out of your tax dollars, and you can’t afford more of this nonsense.

Stan Cho lives 15 mins from Queen’s Park, and yet, he billed you tens of thousands of dollars to stay in fancy hotels downtown. You don’t get free hotel rooms to go do your job. But Stan thinks he deserves special treatment on your dime.

It’s time to put ideology aside and step up for workers. He won’t answer because he knows it’s what needs to be done, but he’s choosing politics over people instead.

Yesterday, Albertans voted overwhelmingly to remain and build a stronger, more united Canada. I’m deeply grateful to every single Albertan who went to the polls to make their voice heard, to show their love and support for the country we call home. There is no doubt that our economic future and sovereignty is under attack by our closest ally and neighbour. Now more than ever, it's very important that we stand together as a country so we can move forward strong and united.

Over the years, our caucus had many important discussions with Mac about strengthening our communities and delivering for the people we represent. May he rest in peace.

I’m proud to support Mayor Olivia Chow on her re-election. Her record speaks for itself and her policies have been transformative for our city. Good politics can change people’s lives, and nobody embodies that better than Mayor Chow. Toronto, don’t forget to vote on Monday, October 26!

My heart goes out to our Canadian Armed Forces serving in CFB Wainwright, as well as their families and loved ones, in the wake of this immense tragedy. I cannot imagine the weight of this news for families with loved ones in the service. Canadians stand with you. We owe a debt of gratitude to first responders and health care workers who are working around the clock to treat those have been injured. I join Canadians from coast to coast to coast as we anxiously await more information about this incident.

Doug Ford ran on a promise to save jobs and fight tariffs but has ignored anyone who told him we need to tariff-proof Ontario. He wasted the first 1.5 years of his mandate talking tough and ignoring the very real challenges that our province is facing. When Trump launched another attack this summer, and workers needed their Premier to act with urgency, all he did was put on a show for the cameras. The fight has been happening, Doug. Where have you been?

On behalf of all Ontario New Democrats, I'm extending my deepest sympathies to everyone who loved our dear friend and colleague, Irene Mathyssen. Whether serving as MP or MPP, Irene worked tirelessly to make her community, province, and country a better place for everyone. She was a community champion, who fought relentlessly for women, workers, and veterans. Irene's loss is immeasurable, but after a life spent as her community's greatest champion, she left our movement better than she found it. I'm thinking of all those who loved her, and who were fortunate to know her like I was. I will miss her infectious smile, her endless energy and of course her friendship. May she rest in peace. We love you, Irene.

Earlier today, I wrote to Doug Ford, asking him to work with the Prime Minister on a plan for public ownership of Stelco. We don’t make this call lightly, but this is a unique moment in our history. One that demands bold, ambitious, and urgent action. We must put ideology aside and put Ontario workers first.       Ontario cannot stand on the sidelines while our industrial capacity is dismantled. Inaction has already resulted in hundreds of layoffs across the province. If we wait any longer, we don't just risk losing good-paying, unionized jobs, but also decades of expertise and industrial capacity.   The best time to act has passed. The second-best time is now. Doug Ford needs to put his money where his mouth is and protect good Ontario jobs.

A new scandal every year, like clockwork. After the Greenbelt scheme, after the Skills Development Fund debacle, we're now learning about the Premier's office allegedly strong-arming the media into giving him favourable coverage.   These are Trumpian tactics for a Premier desperately clinging to power. Every Ontarian should be deeply concerned at the thought of Doug Ford leveraging his office to get the media to push his agenda.    Ontario can't afford more of Doug Ford's insider politics. An NDP government will clean up his corruption, and finally put the people of Ontario first.
