Pub Date! My newest book, “American Odyssey,” has just been released. Having had six such days thus far in a life of 22,630, I can state that it’s a rare, exciting, and humbling moment. What began as some scattered thoughts, proceeded to form with the accumulation of words, underwent constant transformation as the project developed, was subjected to the slicing of the editor’s knife, was transmitted to printers in spite of eternal misgivings that parts could still be improved, and finally appeared at my doorstep as a beautiful physical object, is a magical and mysterious process. My deepest thanks to my good friends Byron Smith and Jeremy Beer for their support and enthusiasm for this book, and for creating and leading the wonderful new press, Creed & Culture Books. I’m grateful to Notre Dame graduate student Gabrielle Grow for extraordinary research and editorial assistance. And my thanks to Brad Birzer, Jessica Hooten Wilson, Joshua Mitchell, and Susan McWilliams Barndt for their humbling blurbs. The book has already sold out at Amazon on day one, but more copies coming soon. You can order there now and await restocking quite soon, or buy directly from the publisher. @Byron4Tradition @bradleybirzer @HootenWilson @C_and_C_Books

Bob is a living saint. And a dear friend. Deserved yet characteristically humble, giving credit to God and his beloved family.

Congratulations to our dear friend Bobby Kloska on being honored tonight at Marian’s Spirit of Giving event. Bobby is truly a gift from God. I often refer to him as a living saint. Blessed to have been there tonight. Chuck did a wonderful job as the emcee. Congrats as well to Rob Meyers and Kitty Gunty, who were also honored for their incredible service to Marian.

This is a nice write-up by Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters, reporting on the conferral of the Pius XI award, which I received recently from the Society of Catholic Social Scientists.

Last week I had the immense pleasure and honor to lecture on Homer’s Odyssey at Ralston College. I met there a group of inspiring young people who were intensely committed to exploring ideas with rigor, seriousness, and as if their lives depended on deep understanding leading to right action. Because, they do, and they know it. It was truly a delight to be with you @RalstonCollege.

How fitting, for a thinker and author whose pen still inspires and enlightens. I have been blessed and honored to be a part of the 20th gathering of the Arendt Forum, convened at Bard College on the banks of the majestic Hudson River.

RT @dparrishcsc: Today we lay to rest Fr. Ed Krause, C.S.C., son of Moose Krause, @NotreDame athletic director from 1949-1981. May Our Lady's prayers guide him gently home to Our Lord.

In February of 2015 we hosted a truly memorable dinner party at our home in South Bend - then relatively new to us, about two and a half years after our move from the D.C. area. Our special guest was Fr. Ed Krause, along two Notre Dame giants, Fr. Bill Miscamble and Prof. David Solomon. Fr. Ed Krause, by then long a C.S.C. priest, was the oldest son of Edward “Moose” Krause, Notre Dame’s renowned (and first) Athletic Director. That evening with Fr. Ed, Fr. Bill, David and Lou Solomon and our family stands out as one of the finest and most memorable in our nearly 15 years since moving here. Those three gentlemen painted in words a stunning portrait of “Old Notre Dame,” a place of remarkable friendships, memory, and tradition. What made it especially unforgettable was that we were able to invite Fr. Ed Krause back into the house he had grown up in. When we moved to South Bend in 2012, we had the good fortune, honor, and privilege to purchase the home once owned by and lived in by the great “Moose” Krause and his family. After dessert, Fr. Krause walked us all through the house, remembering scenes from his childhood and pointing out the changes that had accumulated in the decades in which the home was owned by at least three other families. We had only begun to make our own changes, but - like its other owners - we have been mindful of the home’s historic character and charm, and hope that others who may have lived in this house will be able to recognize it after we pass it on. I learned earlier today that Fr. Krause passed away yesterday at the good age of 86. He lived a good and full life, and I’m grateful for the brief time that were able to reminisce about his childhood and the memories of his father, mother, and old Notre Dame. Please join me in praying for this good priest and for all the faithful departed.

RT @CaseyMattox_: So this is horrific. I do not know the details of this situation. But this is exactly the kind of thing that people have worried would become reality for a long time. And that many have been dismissive of as fear-mongering.

A Massachusetts family says the state took custody of their teenage daughter after they refused to affirm her as a boy, citing their Catholic faith. The parents allege a school counselor socially transitioned their daughter without their knowledge, then reported them to the Department of Children and Families. Now the state has guardianship, and a restraining order prevents the teen's parents and older brother from contacting her. A judge has temporarily blocked the state from administering high-dose testosterone as the family fights the case. The next court hearing is set for Oct. 29. | @LaurenGreenFox @AmericaNewsroom

RT @GivingReview: In 1st part of 2-part conversation, @NotreDame’s @PatrickDeneen talks to @GivingReview’s @mhartmannmke about his new book American Odyssey, the innate American tension between rootedness and restlessness, perfectibility and progressivism, utopianism, and how all these impulses have shaped grantmaking, as well as what “Moonlight” Graham in Field of Dreams might teach us about localism and the meaning of philanthropy. “We are more homeless at the moment than we are at home,” according to Deneen—literally, for younger Americans struggling to settle, buy homes, and start families, but also because technology leaves us elsewhere even when at home. Americans remain as “anxious and restless as Tocqueville described us in the 19th Century.” That restlessness, Deneen says, feeds a belief in perfectibility—the sense that “there’s something beyond, outside, something around the corner that might be better.” The Progressive Era may have represented a “full realization” and “institutionalization” of those impulses, including in philanthropy. He contrasts an older, face-to-face charity, rooted in particular places, with modern philanthropy’s organized pursuit of transformation and progress. And he offers Graham as unlikely exemplar of local rootedness. The story of Graham, whose one-inning major-league baseball career gave way to decades serving as a small-town Minnesota doctor and community pillar, raises a different possibility for philanthropy—staying somewhere alongside and serving the people there.
