@Qu33nB57: Happy Birthday …
HM Royal Marines!
On 28 October 1664, King Charles II ordered the raising of 1,200 land soldiers for sea service, forming the Duke of York & Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot—the direct ancestor of today’s Royal Marines.
Known unofficially as the Admiral’s Regiment, these early marines served as shipboard infantry & the Corps later played a decisive role in the 1704 capture & defence of Gibraltar.
Their motto, Per Mare Per Terram (“By Sea, By Land”), reflects more than three & a half centuries of amphibious service.
