"Sold out" is something you expect to hear about concert tickets or a popular restaurant, not about the cloud, yet that is how Amazon's CEO described AWS capacity, with 2026 sold out and a significant portion of 2028 already booked. The cloud remains available, but the particular infrastructure you need at the scale you need may now require a reservation made long before your application starts generating revenue, which puts capacity planning back in the architecture meeting. Read the full piece on why access to infrastructure must be negotiated well before it is consumed: #CloudComputing #AI #AIInfrastructure #AWS #CapacityPlanning

IBM researchers have demonstrated a way to connect two 120-qubit Nighthawk R1 processors through four L-couplers, superconducting aluminum cables that attach perpendicular to the chip surface and can be installed after the processors are mounted, achieving 99% average fidelity when transferring quantum states between them. They also ran cross-chip controlled-Z gates at 94.75% average fidelity and created entangled states spanning both processors, though the experiment touched only a subset of the 240 qubits and IBM says more improvement is needed before larger systems. Going into WebexOne, I expected video conferencing to dominate the discussion, but a tour of Cisco's Austin office and conversations with the people responsible for the experience left me thinking that description leaves an awful lot out. Walking through a space that echoed an incubator I worked in back in 2001, I recognized the same thinking about how people work, now extended by collaboration technology that lets a remote colleague participate rather than just watch. Read the full piece on why Webex is more than video calls, and why Cisco's own workplace is such a useful place to see it: #Cisco #Webex #Collaboration #HybridWork

Intel has agreed to acquire Israeli quantum software developer Classiq, whose synthesis engine translates algorithms written in its Qmod language into circuits for different quantum processors, reportedly for $2.3 billion in cash and stock, which would make it the most expensive quantum acquisition to date. Intel plans to pair Classiq's tools with its silicon spin-qubit research and manufacturing to turn its quantum group into a full-stack business, and says it will preserve Classiq's compatibility with competing hardware platforms after the deal closes in the first half of 2027. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are pressing the FCC to exclude the 2.5 GHz and 3.45 GHz bands from a proposal to open 482 MHz more spectrum to satellites, warning that transmissions could disrupt the TDD technology their 5G networks depend on, and CTIA estimates more than 300 million consumers rely on services in those bands. The FCC votes October 29 on a measure that would open a comment process rather than authorize operations, but it is being read as an early regulatory test of whether SpaceX can turn Starlink Mobile into a true fourth carrier, with tower negotiations already moving AT&T and T-Mobile shares down nearly 8% on October 23. Global spending on data centers is forecast to reach $2.1 trillion by 2028, more than twice the $1 trillion expected in 2026, according to Bank of America Global Research, which sees AI demand fueling a torrid 37% compound annual growth rate through 2030. Servers represent by far the largest expense at roughly $31.4 million per megawatt, and with tech companies committing huge sums while the long-term economics depend on AI services generating sufficient revenue, when and if those returns fully materialize remains an open question. Facing hostile crowds at local zoning boards and fresh skepticism from midterm candidates, Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft are overhauling their playbook, offering billions in community investments, curtailing tax breaks and abandoning the nondisclosure agreements that once kept residents in the dark until the final vote. Local skeptics are calling the concessions cosmetic PR, and with nearly 40 states still offering billions in sales tax exemptions, developers concede that without genuine local buy-in the physical foundation of the AI revolution cannot be built. Nvidia and researchers at Germany's Jülich Supercomputing Centre used 8,192 GPUs to simulate a 104-qubit process for fault-tolerant quantum computing on JUPITER, Europe's first exascale supercomputer, in what Nvidia calls the largest comprehensive simulation of a fault-tolerant quantum processor to date. The work modeled coherent phase errors and leakage rather than ideal conditions, and Nvidia claims the approach could cut the physical qubits needed to produce magic states by up to 90%, though fewer qubits may also mean slower state production. This week's IT funding roundup covers five deals spanning cloud financing, processor development, GPU software, traffic security and continuous integration, from Nebius's $3.5 billion credit facility down to Blacksmith's $66 million Series C. The common question across all of them is how much of that new capital will translate into usable capacity and dependable operations rather than just bigger balance sheets. Google has agreed with Voltus to build a virtual power plant providing up to 1,070 megawatts of capacity in the PJM market, making it one of the largest such agreements involving a hyperscaler. Unlike a conventional plant, it coordinates energy usage across thousands of businesses and households, cutting consumption at peak demand to free up capacity, though it remains an open question whether these networks can scale fast enough to keep pace with the data center buildout. For decades the golden rule of data center development was proximity to internet hubs, low taxes, cheap electricity and friendly local zoning, and the explosive rise of energy-hungry AI is rewriting that playbook, forcing tech giants to prioritize two scarce resources: available power and receptive neighbors. Data centers now account for more than half the forecasted U.S. electricity demand growth over the next five years, and as "not in my backyard" sentiment grows, the race for AI dominance will no longer be won by whoever offers the biggest tax break. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang used GTC Berlin to outline an ambitious expansion of the chipmaker's European AI strategy, unveiling new infrastructure designs, agent security technology and partnerships that push the company beyond GPUs into the systems enterprises need to deploy AI at scale. Big picture: some of that technology won't arrive until early 2027, the performance claims still need validating in real-world use, and for European customers the open question is whether they can expand adoption and keep data sovereignty without deepening dependence on a single tech giant. The chairman and CEO of Everpure said today it's only a matter of time before IT architects must revisit how data is stored across the enterprise, because multiple copies of the same data sets create conflicting versions, and whenever an AI agent encounters those, the chances its output will be flawed only increase. Resolving that will require a data plane through which data becomes accessible to any application or AI agent, and as Giancarlo puts it, the relationship between data and the application needs to be inverted. Boomi has acquired Israeli data observability startup Elementary Data for a reported $45 million, extending its platform beyond connecting applications into verifying the data AI agents act on. A Forrester study Boomi commissioned found 86% of organizations have moved past agent pilots but only 34% trust the actions their agents take, and 77% of the least-ready ones are pushing into production anyway.
