    In Dublin this week, Jewish community leaders from across the world met with government envoys from 28 countries, with representatives from at least seven international organizations, and with executives from technology companies for the 15th meeting of the Special Envoys and Coordinators Combating Antisemitism (SECCA) Forum. The Forum is organized by the WJC in partnership with the @EU_Commission and convened under 🇮🇪 Ireland’s rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. ⚠️ Since the terror attacks of October 7, 2023, Jewish communities have been subjected to never-ending waves of hatred, violence, and ostracization from public life. This meeting in Dublin is a much-needed opportunity to reset the conversation between Jewish organizations, governments, and technology companies, including about how to counter online hate.

    Speaking to @JewishNewsUK, @chiefrabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis expressed significant fear for Britain’s future. “My greatest fear is for Britain itself – the future of our culture, our identity, our values. Our civilization is under attack and my fear is exacerbated because I believe that our national leadership is choosing to turn a blind eye to that direct threat.” Today, hate is spreading through social media – much of it centered on lies about the October 7 massacre in Israel. That hate translates into the streets and targets Jewish communities in the real world. Rabbi Mirvis continued to call for Jewish unity as the avenue to maintaining a thriving Jewish future in the UK. 🔗

    A very important investigation by @CBCNews delving deeper into the shootings on synagogues and the US consulate in Toronto, Canada, earlier this year. They were carried out by young hired gunmen, recruited by outside actors over encrypted messaging apps, as confirmed by @TorontoPolice. The attacks are likely directed and financed by the Islamic regime in Iran.

    Mazal tov to @Cha_Knobloch, WJC's Commissioner for Holocaust Memory, who celebrates her 94th birthday today. Ad 120! A Holocaust survivor, Dr. Knobloch headed the Munich Jewish community from 1985 and also served as the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany from 2006-2010. It was the first time a woman was elected to lead the organization. She dedicated her efforts to the revival of Jewish life in Germany. Among her major achievements was the opening in 2006-2007 of Munich’s main new Ohel Jakob synagogue, the community center, as well as the Jewish museum. In 2008, Dr. Knobloch was awarded the Grand Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Despite the rising tide of antisemitism in Europe, and the threats the community faces, Dr. Knobloch is optimistic: “I have great faith in young people, and I mean both Jewish and non-Jewish. I think they will take on the responsibility, and that is ultimately all that matters.”

    The UN’s Commission of Inquiry published its latest report on Israel on Monday, offering yet another politically driven, one-sided account that fails to meet basic standards of impartiality and objectivity. Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese also presented her latest report to the UN General Assembly's Third Committee. Two UN reports this week. Both built to invert reality. One recasts 1948, when five Arab armies invaded Israel, as colonial “expulsion.” The other comes from a UN rapporteur condemned by member states for antisemitism and Holocaust distortion. The question isn’t what these reports say about Israel. It’s what they say about the UN. @UN member states should ask why they are going along with this charade.

    We welcome 🇵🇪 Peru's decision to adopt @TheIHRA's working definition of antisemitism. This is especially important amid the current explosion of antisemitism globally. By identifying antisemitism, the IHRA Definition has become a critical tool in countering it.

    Just past midnight on October 28, an attacker, who was a minor, shouted “Allahu Akbar” while attacking a guard outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade with knives. The guard sustained a minor facial injury and shot the attacker dead in self-defence. Serbian security services had already been monitoring the attacker. According to the Interior Minister, they displayed Islamic State symbols on Instagram. Tragically, this is part of a growing trend and threat of Islamist radicalization among the youth in Western societies. It is a serious concern that must be addressed directly by governments, law enforcement, civil society, and private sector tech companies.

    Eight years ago, the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh shattered our sense of security as Jews in the Diaspora. On October 27, 2018, 11 people were murdered by a gunman while they were at synagogue attending Shabbat morning services. We remember their names: Richard Gottfried, 65, Rose Mallinger, 97, Jerry Rabinowitz, 66, Cecil Rosenthal, 59, David Rosenthal, 54, Bernice Simon, 84, Sylvan Simon, 86, Daniel Stein, 71, Melvin Wax, 88, Irving Younger, 69. That this level of violence against Jews was possible, in the US, was previously unfathomable. Since October 7, 2023, we have seen antisemitism and violence against Jews rise even more. Today, Jews go to synagogue and our children to Jewish schools under security protection. It is the responsibility of governments at all levels to protect their Jewish communities.

    ⚠️ This is a roundup of just a few of the antisemitic incidents in the last few days, impacting Jewish communities and Jewish security across the globe. ▪️ A woman stabbed two Jewish men in Midtown Manhattan with a syringe, in two incidents within minutes of each other. She was arrested over the weekend and faces hate crime charges. ▪️ Three Jewish women were attacked on the street in the Clapton Common area of London by a 33-year-old man. He was detained at the scene by Shomrim, a volunteer Jewish watch group. ▪️ A man was arrested for attempting to set fire to the Young Israel synagogue in West Hempstead, New York. He had also repeatedly hit the synagogue doors with a baseball bat. ▪️ A threatening antisemitic note was left at the Center for Jewish History in New York City. It said ‘Nuke Jews, Save Lives.’

    We support the position of our UK affiliate @BoardofDeputies: By adopting an antisemitic platform, the Green Party of England and Wales has become a racist party, and needs to be treated as such. Earlier this month, the party voted and declared that 'Zionism is racism,' a position which threatens the very existence of the Jewish State. Adopting an antisemitic platform is a clear and present danger to the welfare and safety of the Jewish community in the UK itself. See the BoD statement 🔗

    We were honored to meet with @magnusbrunner, the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, in Brussels this week for a kick-off meeting on our latest project. For the next two years, WJC will be heading the LEAD project, with the @ucei_it, @Le_CRIF, the Jewish communities of Slovakia, and funded by the @EU_Commission. It trains young Jewish leaders to address antisemitism and strengthen Jewish life across Europe, through leadership forums, support for small communities, exchanges, online learning and video storytelling, as well as Catholic-Jewish dialogue seminars in Rome. @ViktorEichner, WJC's Representative to the Holy See and Italy, presented the full details of the collaboration. We are grateful for the Commissioner Brunner's invaluable support.

    🕯️ Two Israeli soldiers were killed today after Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a military checkpoint near Hebron, resulting in a gunfight which also saw the two attackers killed. Three other soldiers were injured. The two victims have been named as Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman (left) and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem (right). Our deepest condolences are with their families, now entering Shabbat with this tragedy.
