For now, I think the value is less in your specific genome and more in having a large number of people’s genomes measured alongside their health (and outcomes) over a long period of time. That’s what teaches us how to use any one genome. PCSK9 is one of the best examples. The Dallas Heart Study started in 2000 with ~3,500 people. In 2005, researchers found that some participants carried a broken copy of PCSK9 and had much lower LDL. In 2006, a second long-running cohort (ARIC, ~13,000 people followed for 15 years) showed those carriers had up to 88% lower risk of heart disease. A broken gene that protects you is basically nature running the experiment for us. The first PCSK9 drugs were approved in 2015, and the first oral PCSK9 pill was approved this July. We used a group of people’s genomes to uncover an insight that helped us create an intervention. Now it’s time to scale it. The more we do this, the more I think we’ll discover new treatments and change care along the way. A recent Nature paper (683,000+ people across 3 biobanks, up to 52 years of follow-up) compressed 348 diseases into 21 shared signatures, and a model built on them beat standard risk scores like PREVENT at predicting disease 1 and 10 years out. A few call outs: that model runs on diagnosis codes, not lifestyle or environment (we can do better here). And a single genome can be actionable today for a small slice of people (roughly 1-6% carry a flagged variant in genes like BRCA1 — larger percentage for things like ApoE). For most of us...for now... the payoff is collective. Let's keep pushing!

I can't find a way to use my genome. I’m the most intense longevity athlete in the world and haven’t used my genome for a single thing. Fully sequenced in 2012. Again this year, paying $7,902 for matched 30x long read + 100x short read. Still, nothing. What am I missing?
