RT @GeroScienceAGE: 🧠🩸 New in #GeroScience | Open Access Can protecting the brain’s blood vessels help prevent diabetes-related cognitive decline? In a new study, Xing Fan, Fan Fan & Richard Roman and colleagues investigated the inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) as a potential strategy to address cognitive deficits associated with diabetes. 🔬 The researchers found that sEH inhibition improved cognitive deficits while preserving neurovascular integrity and reducing glial activation and neuropathological changes in a model of diabetes-related dementia. These findings highlight the importance of neurovascular health in cognitive function and suggest that targeting sEH may offer a promising direction for future research into diabetes-associated cognitive impairment. 📖 Read the open-access article: #AgingResearch #NeurovascularHealth #Diabetes #CognitiveDecline #Neuroinflammation #Geroscience

RT @GeroScienceAGE: 🧠🩸 New in #GeroScience | Open Access How are obesity and type 2 diabetes associated with brain oxygen metabolism and cognitive health in older adults? In a new study, Mohamad N. Elsharydah and colleagues investigated regional oxygen extraction fraction (OEF)—a measure of how much oxygen the brain extracts from the blood—in older adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity. 🔬 The findings indicate higher regional OEF in these individuals, with associations involving cognitive performance and metabolic markers. These results offer insights into the relationship between metabolic health and cerebral oxygen utilization during aging. 📖 Read the open-access article: #AgingResearch #BrainHealth #Type2Diabetes #Obesity #CognitiveHealth #Geroscience

RT @GeroScienceAGE: 🚶‍♀️🧠 New in #GeroScience | Open Access How does aging affect our ability to maintain balance when visual information becomes unreliable? In a new study, Yaqi Li and colleagues investigated how repeated visual perturbations during walking affect balance control in younger and older adults. 🔬 The findings show that older adults' balance control is more affected by repeated visual perturbations than that of younger adults, highlighting potential age-related differences in adapting to changing visual environments during walking. Understanding how aging influences balance adaptation may help inform future research on mobility, fall risk, and healthy aging. 📖 Read the open-access article: #AgingResearch #Balance #FallPrevention #Mobility #HealthyAging

Could your gut bacteria track how fast you age? A new University of Hawaiʻi study in Scientific Reports analyzed stool and blood samples from 123 adults. Gut microbiome makeup accounted for about 15% of the variation in biological aging pace (DunedinPACE). Bifidobacterium adolescentis was linked to slower aging, and Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens to faster aging. Caveats: this is correlational, so the bacteria may be markers of aging, not drivers. The sample is small, and no one has yet tested whether changing the microbiome slows aging. Paper: #aging #longevity #microbiome #healthspan @uhmanoa

RT @NIH: 🧬 Think of your genes like a family recipe—passed down from your parents with instructions that help shape how your body works. Over time, changes can occur in those instructions. Some may have little effect, while others can increase the risk of disease. NIH researchers are studying why additional genetic changes in some people born with a mutated gene called RUNX1 can increase their risk of developing blood cancer, while others with the mutation may never develop cancer. 🎥 Watch to learn more:

RT @GeroScienceAGE: 🧬 New in #GeroScience | Open Access Could an imbalance in genome activity help explain why aging accelerates after maturity? In this new study, Lev Salnikov, Saveli Goldberg, and Eugene Pinsky integrate cross-species epigenetic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data to investigate changes in two functional gene groups during aging. 🔬 The researchers report a post-maturity shift in which housekeeping genes, involved in essential cellular maintenance, lose transcriptional share in low-renewal tissues, while integrative genes associated with specialized tissue functions show increasing variability in promoter DNA methylation. 📖 Read the article: #AgingResearch #Epigenetics #GeneExpression #Genomics #HealthyAging

Longevity Week: three new studies from this month, and what each one does and doesn't show. SRSF1 (Harvard Wyss Institute, Nature Aging): delivering one gene to aged mice extended median lifespan by 14%. It's cells and mice only, and delivery and mechanism are unsolved. Menopause map (Weizmann Institute, Nature Medicine): across 300M+ lab tests from 1M+ women, hormone shifts began 12–15 years before menopause, and 52 of 90 tests showed abrupt changes around it. These are associations, not proof that each change causes disease. Cell rejuvenation (University of Bonn, Aging Cell): epigenetic clocks put neural stem cells from an 80-year-old donor at under 20. It's cells in a dish from one donor, and clock ages are estimates. Exciting science, early evidence. The real test is human trials. Papers: · · #aging #longevity #healthspan

RT @GeroScienceAGE: 🧬 New in #GeroScience | Open Access Review How does mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to chronic inflammation and biological aging? In this new review, Salvatore Nesci and Cristina Algieri explore how declining mitochondrial function connects bioenergetic failure, cellular senescence, and inflammaging. 🔬 The authors examine how oxidative stress, impaired mitochondrial quality control, mitochondrial DNA release, and inflammatory signaling can reinforce one another, potentially accelerating tissue dysfunction and age-related decline. 📖 Read the open-access review: #AgingResearch #Mitochondria #Inflammaging #CellularSenescence #HealthyAging

RT @theA4LI: Alzheimer’s disease can begin changing the brain years before symptoms appear. Understanding what drives those changes, and intervening earlier, could open new opportunities to prevent or delay cognitive decline. @ARPA_H is investing up to $48.8 million in new Alzheimer’s research focused on that early window. Mass General Brigham is launching a national clinical trial platform to test multiple preventive therapies simultaneously, before symptoms emerge. Washington University in St. Louis is building an open, AI-enabled data platform to help uncover the biological drivers of the disease. Other teams will investigate the earliest stages of cognitive decline and study how interventions affect brain health in at-risk older adults. These projects build on a broader ARPA-H Alzheimer’s research portfolio totaling up to $155.3 million. It includes BIOGAMI, which aims to detect and address early protein dysfunction, and NIGHT, which is studying ways to improve sleep and mitigate women’s elevated risk of Alzheimer’s. 📖 Read more here: At A4LI, we believe advancing human health means addressing age-related diseases before they take hold. Research that uncovers the earliest drivers of Alzheimer’s could help shift the focus from managing disease to preventing or delaying its onset, giving more people the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives.
