RT @AVGregR: Critics said robotaxis would crush rideshare drivers. But 2 years of data from 5 robotaxi cities says they’re crushing something else: Uber's rent-seeking. In AV cities, rideshare companies are paying drivers more. Yet DC’s next mayor wants to hit pause. 🧵

RT @AVGregR: It’s natural for people have questions about AVs when they first hear about them. But when people get more information about AV safety, and especially once they take their first ride, favorability jumps meaningfully. I’ve seen it countless times engaging with communities IRL.

But a separate independent poll by a consulting firm found that 48% of D.C. residents actually support self-driving cars, with that increasing to 55% after hearing that they are involved in fewer crashes than human-driven cars.

RT @mhf187: New PF Global poll shows plurality support for AVs in the DC area. The same poll finds that once people try AVs, their approval goes up 30 - 40 percentage points. DC residents should have more transit options.

RT @ethanteicher: It isn't notable that a skeptical public would respond to a scary push poll about AVs by being skeptical. What is notable is how drastically different attitudes toward AVs are among those who have tried them or seen them on the road, vs those who haven't.

D.C. today: 48% say make robotaxis legal, 37% say no. San Francisco, where they're part of daily life: 60% to 28%. The more people see them, the more they want them.

Adam's research validates a lot of what I've seen firsthand. Both good and bad faith opposition to AVs benefit from the public's unfamiliarity with the technology. But once AVs are actually on the streets, much of that skepticism quickly disappears.

I ran an analysis of the local press, regulatory filings, and city records in every market Waymo has entered (Phoenix, SF, L.A.) The key finding: Robotaxi opposition peaks before anyone has ridden. Then it collapses. Same four phases - but the cycle is speeding up ⬇️

CM @charlesallen told me he'll still push the bill this year. “AVs have the potential to lead to safer operations … but there is the risk of an impact on workforce" and that's why the bill will always use fees/VMT for a workforce displacement fund, he said.

DC is facing a jobs crisis. Rushing the legalization of autonomous vehicles is irresponsible given the anticipated AI-related job displacement and disruptions that put countless workers at risk.

For those who have been speaking up in support of AVs in DC, now is a good time to make sure the other members of the Transportation Committee hear from you, too. Bill B26-0684 is expected to be marked up in early November.

RT @TheRideshareGuy: Yesterday, Waymo sent an email to LA riders asking for their help urging local officials to approve autonomous rides to LAX. Waymo serves more than 120 square miles of Los Angeles, but there’s still one major place it isn’t allowed to go: LAX. For now, there is a workaround: take a Waymo to the LAX/Metro Transit Center and transfer to the free shuttle to the terminals. It’s probably not as convenient as a curbside drop-off, but it’s better than nothing. What do you think? Is there any reason Waymo shouldn’t be allowed to operate at LAX? I discussed it more on @driverlessguy_:

RT @MayorFrey: Requiring a driver in a driverless car doesn’t make sense. Minneapolis is open for business, open to innovative technology, and open to a variety of transportation options. Thoughtful regulation for safety is necessary, but not through a backdoor ban.
