I’d call WILDWOOD a miracle, but that would undermine its uniquely human achievement. In a time when billions are being poured into tech to artificially construct images via theft, its stunning stop motion is a titanic testament to the irreplaceable power of human artistry.

Dark, violent, and lengthy, Laika didn’t make any compromises in telling its epic story, culminating in a final battle that’s one of the most impressive cinematic achievements I’ve ever seen. Each minute of its 5 year production and every cent of its enormous budget is evident.

I have one more movie left to see at CIFF and unless Brad Bird really blows me away (which is very possible!), this was the best film I saw at the fest

Andrew Scott is shatteringly good in ELSINORE. Such an incredible conveyor of internal tumult that holds, holds, holds, until it finally can't help but burst forth. Reason enough to see the movie, which I found generally effective and very powerful, if frustratingly assembled.

The many montages didn't bother me...to a point. The quick cutting evokes a life speeding by before it can be fully lived as desired. But once Hamlet opens, slowing down would've been a comparative, appropriate relief (and I wanna see him act his scenes in full!)

THE DEBUT is an amusingly exaggerated, and shockingly mean look at what waiting in life’s wings can do to someone. Black Swan meets Waiting for Guffman, but less captivating than the former, less funny than the latter. Julianne Moore is fully, stunningly entwined into her role.
