Chain-Pulling on Democracy
Protesters travelling from Pune to Delhi to participate in a CJP demonstration were forced off their train at Itarsi and confined against their will in a hotel.
Is this what democracy looks like?
Remember, 169 years ago, in Jhansi, barely 400 kilometres from Itarsi, the British branded Rani Lakshmibai an enemy as she rose in revolt against colonial rule.
Itarsi has long held a significant place in India’s history of resistance, from the freedom struggle against British rule to the socio-political movements that have shaped the country since independence.
A troubling question remains: if dissent was suppressed under colonial rule, what does it say about our democracy when protesters are prevented from peacefully exercising their right to protest today?
