There is a double-edged sword to inspiration.
I saw beautiful art in Marfa. Easily the highest level in the four years that I’ve been going. I experienced art that won’t leave my brain and that I’ve talked about so often that I feel like I’m annoying people.
These artists have drawn a clear line of intention and have leapt over it. I don’t believe there is such thing as good or bad art but I do believe that the level of intention and care can be seen, especially if someone is willing to pay attention.
I draw inspiration from this art and these artists not because of how long the work took, or the scale that it’s presented. The artists I’m talking about have created something only they could. They are elite. They have honed a skill that cannot be replicated. The quality of their work has nothing to do with how many people praise them, or who their collectors are or their floor price. There is no floor price, their work transcends the transactional.
The duality of inspiration, however, encourages unimaginable creativity, but introduces immense feelings of doubt manifested as imposter syndrome.
All of that to say, I guess we’ll see what’s next 🤔
