RT @manishrjain: After a year of quiet work, I'm ready to announce Egres. Egres is a Postgres-compatible database designed to tackle heavy workloads and run thousands of tenants on the same server. It works with psql and drivers unchanged. The post covers the what, the why and the how: For Egres, I wrote a new storage engine called zdb: a tree of LSM trees, which I call an LSM forest. It runs on local disk or object storage, has roaring bitmaps integration for indexing, and can do instant zero-copy branches of a database or a table. Everything runs on zfiber, a coroutine system I wrote for Egres. It meters CPU ticks, disk IOPS and memory used per query, per tenant, so thousands of tenants can share the same server without the noisy neighbor problem. This release is single node and the query features are very basic. Raft replication is already baked in. Future releases will allow multi-node clusters. Try it out! Would love to hear what you think.

Fire doesn't know nor care what it burns. LLMs neither know nor care what they hack. The sooner that we think about containing them like fire, the better. We aren't shocked when a campfire performs a "misaligned action" by igniting the mess of flammable material all around it.

LLMs are like a live, shorting electrical wire, they will emit random tokens that cause them to say random things and do random things when you hook tools up to them. LLMs words are an illusion, they are just numbers to the model. Electricity is powerful but we know how to contain it and generally avoid accidents by now. We should look at LLMs generating tokens the same way as we look at fire, electricity, nuclear chain reactions, etc.

RT @samhogan: We believe access to capable open-source cyber models is our constitutional right as Americans under the 2nd Amendment. It is our duty as technologists and patriots to help protect the digital infrastructure that powers the world's largest economy. As such, we’re serving our cyber models “at-cost”, in US data centers only, with ZDR enabled by default. We do not plan to make money serving these models. If you run a company that is considering how to best protect against cybercrime, reach out to me or @atbeme. We’d be happy to advise. KYC required. Apply below.

RT @matthew_d_green: I don’t know how seriously to take this, but it’ll be pretty funny if every security researcher in the US gets pwned using open-weight models, because the frontier US labs wouldn’t give them access to their red-team models.
    Cohere @cohere
While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report:

RT @poteto: so many gems and great tips in this talk from @yminsky about how to improve your codebase for agents • agents thrive on feedback, and types are one of the best kinds • make illegal states unrepresentable with types, and it enforces global rules across your codebase • property based tests, fuzzing, and even full-system deterministic simulation testing • expect tests: just print stuff out and capture it in the test. makes behavior legible. it's very similar to how compilers have fixture tests, it reduces the review surface area • formal methods used to be very expensive: seL4 is about 8,700 lines of C and took around 25 person-years, with 23 lines of proof for every line of C code, but agents change the roi

RT @gmkurtzer: Oh FFS. Thank you for your concern Sam, but don’t spread your FUD and doom bait in my waters. I lead one of the most utilized Linux operating systems in the world for data centers and enterprises, and I founded its predecessor too. While AI is surely accelerating finding human created security issues, it is a temporary problem, and most open source project leads have already figured out how to also use AI to reduce new bugs moving forward. Here is a graph from GKH (who maintains the stable kernel) on how many CVEs they are remediating per release: This graph describes how much better each release is now getting: This doom based marketing approach that the AI labs are pushing is really short sighted. While this will of course drive business to us, I find it unethical to distort the truth and use scare tactics in messaging. The greater truth is that AI is making the software industry more secure, by identifying the human errors in code, and soon we will end up in a much better place.
