Atchison, Kansas. The Sallie House, 508 N 2nd St. The house dates to the mid 1800s and was commissioned by the Finney family, home to Dr. Charles Finney. Legend says he practiced medicine on the bottom floor, and that a little girl named Sallie was brought in by her mother with severe abdominal pain. Believing her appendix was about to rupture, he began emergency surgery and made the first incision before the anesthesia kicked in. Sallie screamed in pain and bled out on the table. Tenants have reported activity for decades, especially men. Some male residents and visitors say they were scratched until they bled, which earned Sallie the name "The Man Hating Ghost." Some believe "Sallie" is only a facade for something more demonic. Then there is the controversy. There is no physical evidence that a Sallie ever lived or died on the property, and it has been said the mayor made the story up as a publicity stunt to bring visitors to Atchison. Even the floor plan does not really fit the idea of a doctor's office downstairs. The house has been vacant since the 1990s, was listed on Zillow for $1 million in 2016, dropped to $499,000, and came off the market in 2017. This is exactly correct!! I was born/raised in Michigan, my husband born and raised in Canada. He came here after he was left on a gurney for 9 hours with Peritonitis after a burst appendix when they couldn’t find a surgeon to operate. Soon as he recovered, he moved to the states got his green card and never looked back. He is now a naturalized US citizen. His Dad, athletic into his 80s, couldn’t get anyone in Canada do a blockage heart surgery. He died despite having both parents live to be 100 in Europe. We hate Canadian socialized medicine.
