Surprising, but true, and few outside Japan know it yet. The country that built the world’s first humanoid robot at Waseda in 1973. The country that dominated factory-floor industrial robots through Fanuc and Yaskawa for four decades. The country whose pop culture — from Astro Boy to Doraemon — normalised the robot more deeply than any other on earth. The country with the world’s most acute aging population, the perfect customer for the eldercare robot. Yet in a Waseda lab scientists projected a slide that said the quiet part out loud. “Humanoid robotics has lost momentum since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.” “Investment is difficult without a clear killer application.” Investment sank. Industry turned away. China took the lead. The Robot PR Disaster After Fukushima, the world watched for Japan’s humanoids. ASIMO had dazzled the White House in 2003 and was the single most recognisable face of 21st-century robotics. The expectation was simple — Japan’s showpiece robot would walk into the contaminated plant, assess damage, carry debris, assist decommissioning. It could not. ASIMO could not reliably climb rubble, open warped doors, or operate valves human engineers could no longer reach. The world’s most famous humanoid was unable to handle the world’s most urgent humanoid task. Japan ended up relying on American iRobot PackBots, British QinetiQ Talons, and Boston Dynamics Atlas — all from countries Japan had long thought to lead. The PR setback was total. Honda retired ASIMO in 2022. SoftBank retired Pepper the same year. Japan’s two most visible consumer robots went quiet together. Puzzle of Killer Application Fifteen years on, Japan’s scientists name the structural problem directly. No killer application. Few companies pioneer new fields — Tokyo Robotics, RT Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries are the three names Waseda could list on the slide. University R&D is capped by doctoral enrolment and research funding. Eldercare shows strong demand but commercial deployment lags. GENIAC launched February 2024. AIRoA established December 2024. The AI Robotics Strategy issued March 2026. Japan is still searching for the product that justifies its capability. While Japan Searched, the World Moved China’s Unitree sells its G1 humanoid for $16,000 and its larger H1 for $90,000. UBTECH and XPeng mass-produce them. Boston Dynamics is Korean-owned — Hyundai paid $880 million for it in 2021. In the United States, Figure, Agility, 1X and Apptronik raised billions in 2024-2025 alone. Tesla’s Optimus has entered its third generation. Europe is catching up — Dyson’s London humanoid lab, Germany’s Franka Emika, Switzerland’s ETH Zurich ANYmal. Japan’s March 2026 AI Robotics Strategy sets the target: capture ¥20 trillion of the global robotics market by 2040 — parity with the United States and China. Fourteen years from now.
