Ever wondered why some turbo cars go “STUTUTU” and others go “PSSSHH” when you lift off the throttle? 🤔
When the throttle snaps shut, the boosted air between the compressor and the throttle has nowhere to go.
🔁 STUTUTU (compressor surge / flutter): Without a blow-off valve, the trapped air pushes back against the compressor. It surges back and forth through the wheel in rapid pulses, and that makes the fluttering sound. The compressor wheel never spins backwards; only the air reverses.
💨 PSSSHH (blow-off valve): A blow-off valve sits between the compressor outlet and the throttle. When the throttle closes, the valve snaps open and vents the excess boost to the atmosphere, which makes the hiss. A recirculating valve sends that air back to the compressor inlet instead, so it’s much quieter.
