    If you want to get an appreciation of the shitshow that is the Revit API with libraries using modern frameworks, try using Text.Json in your app and get working with Revit 2019-2023 #DllHell 🤦‍♂️

    En los 90s los problemas en la programación venían por cosas como el #dllhell ahora la movida viene por tener mil plataformas con mis sistemas y mil problemas distintos con cada una.

    You used to be able to just create a Native GUI App in 10 seconds. No Electron, no Game Engines, no Web frameworks. Just a lean fast .EXE produced in seconds. Works on any Windows machine WITHOUT Internet connection. Software Development is actually going backwards.

    @ErwinWolff @razdriz Saying that VB6 didn't compile natively because it required some dlls (which were shipped with windows anyway) is probably the craziest shit I've heard on this platform so far. Thank you! (btw, by the same logic not a single C program on Linux is compiled natively, jfyi 😉)

    How it started challenge...Some of you don't know about allocating $100 a paycheck, taking it to Borders books, carrying these home on the bus, then reading, not quite understanding most of it but managing to highlight a few sections to make it through your tech journey.

    @chixcancode @shanselman Pre-everything-online it could take years to get an important piece of knowledge. In my case, where did the system look to load a dll, and in what order. Eventually Microsoft put the docs where Google could find them. #dllhell. This was just one.

    In the early Node/NPM days, this got crickets: "You'll get different versions of some dependencies trying to interop! It will be chaos!" Today: Storybook depends on webpack 4. If you're on webpack 5, you get 4 and 5 installed together, trying to build the same app. It is chaos.

    @b0rk
    @b0rk This calls back to an earlier comic you wrote/drew. How do processes get their shared libraries? They memory-map them! And that allows the non-variable portions of those libraries to be shared by all processes using them, which saves a TON of memory over static linking.

    @b0rk Dynamic libraries also allow bugs to be fixed without having to rebuild the applications. This is particularly important for security related libraries, like OpenSSL. Problems crop up, however, when incompatible API changes break applications without notice. #DLLHell
