Okay, prospective #gradstudents. Let’s clarify a few things about funding at US institutions. Here’s some key information you should know before you start applying and cold emailing potential advisors. ✏️ US institutions (high-level research ones – so-called-R1s) fund more #PhDstudents than #MS students. Why? Because our goals are (1) to graduate PhDs to maintain R1 status and (2) do transformative research, which requires a PhD-type time commitment. Caveat: non-PhD-granting institutions do often fund MS degrees. 🎓 In the US, we admit grad students directly to PhD programs. You don’t need an MS degree first (though if you’re changing fields from your BS to PhD, it is helpful). 🎱 No, it will not improve your chances of funding if you email Department Chairs or Graduate Committee Chairs asking for Teaching Assistantships. TAs (and other assistantships) are decided as part of your admission decision and included in your offer package. Communicate your interests with the program based on research fit, not funding. We know you need funding! 🎯 Target your applications. Lack of commitment to a field shows through in your statement of purpose (SOP). Make connections with people in the research area and at programs that you really want to pursue as your life’s work. Diluting your effort to apply to dozens of places will not up your chances of admission and funding because your SOP will lack passion and authenticity. 📛 Please don’t be angry at a faculty member you want to work with who says they don’t have funding. I promise you – we all want to fund more students. I spend at least 20% of my work time writing proposals – about 10-15 hours per week – and double that in September, October and May. Grant funding is hard to come by, and we do our best! 💲 If you are lucky enough to have multiple offers, the stipend dollar amount isn’t the only thing to consider. You need to understand cost of living (e.g. living in Ithaca, NY at Cornell University is expensive, but living in New York City will cost more!) and how far your stipend will go. Understand if you’re responsible for any fees. Great message from Prof. Jillian Goldfarb from Cornell University.(Via LinkedIn)

Two challenges I gave to #gradstudents at the end of this panel: 1. In the next 2 weeks do something new and fun that has nothing to do with grad school 2. Hang out with your cohort without alcohol & with no talk about grad school or research - get to know one another as people

#GradStudents are arguably *the* primary producers of #research output at Canadian universities, and core contributors to the #teaching and #leadership missions of their institutions. **But how (and how well) are they compensated?** Let's take a look! A long thread 🧵👇 (1/n)
