For nearly 60 years, our team of 1,200 nuclear professionals at Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in South Carolina has been manufacturing the fuel pellets, rods and assemblies that power roughly 10% of all U.S. electricity needs.
Now, we're investing in the facility’s next chapter and in the community that has powered us since 1968. A nearly $1 billion expansion at Columbia will allow us to manufacture LEU+ fuel, a new type of nuclear fuel which will extend the time between refueling outages at American nuclear power plants. That means more power at a time when electricity demand is skyrocketing across the United States.
This new LEU+ plant will be the first fleet-scale nuclear fuel factory built in the U.S. in more than 50 years.
Thank you for your support of nuclear energy! Westinghouse believes there has never been a better time to expand this secure and reliable carbon-free energy for all Americans.
