Revisiting this tweet from June. $STRL was trading around $940 at the time and is now ~$270. I've been skeptical of the engineering & construction (E&C) companies levered to the data center buildout for some time. At their peaks, valuations had effectively priced in a backlog of turning the entire United States into one enormous data center. A few observations: 1) The second derivative of capex matters more than the absolute level. Hyperscaler spending can remain enormous while the rate of growth decelerates. For businesses priced on the assumption of sustained acceleration in project awards, even a modest slowdown can result in significant multiple compression. Absolute capex doesn't need to decline for these equities to perform poorly. 2) Backlog is neither guaranteed revenue nor guaranteed earnings. Projects can be delayed, resized or cancelled. More importantly, backlog is a lagging indicator of demand. Revenue and earnings can remain strong for several quarters after the rate of new awards begins deteriorating. Investors often extrapolate current backlog growth without adequately considering the cyclicality of incremental orders. 3) Watch accounts receivable and cash conversion. These are working-capital-intensive businesses with meaningful differences between revenue recognition and cash collection. Receivables and contract assets growing faster than revenue warrant scrutiny, particularly as project sizes increase. I'd pay close attention to the relationship between reported earnings growth and actual free cash flow generation. 4) International diversification matters. Interestingly, E&C businesses with greater international exposure and more diversified end markets have generally been more resilient. Their earnings are less dependent on the continuation of the US hyperscaler capex cycle. 5) Expect violent short squeezes along the way. These stocks have already experienced significant drawdowns and positioning can become extremely one-sided. However, the underlying valuation problem remains. Any moderation in backlog growth or management guidance can lead to another substantial repricing. Look at Primoris ($PRIM). The company reported record backlog, yet the stock was punished following weaker earnings guidance and concerns around cash conversion. Imagine what happens when backlog actually begins contracting. Ultimately, many of these businesses may continue reporting excellent financial results. The problem is that their valuations have already capitalized several years of extraordinary growth. The transition from extraordinary growth to merely good growth can be devastating for equities, even when the underlying businesses remain fundamentally sound.

At some point the Bag7 will need to get bid or the party is over. Eventually, Management teams will respond to their share prices and start curtailing capex. If that happens, the first short is probably E&C companies. Backlog can disappear just as quickly as it appears!

Hidden Habits of Top Minds EP34: Palmer Luckey Here's something counterintuitive: while other founders study how to win, Palmer Luckey started collecting losers as a teenager — dead VR headsets nobody wanted. He called it the world's largest private collection of them. Luckey, founder of Oculus, got obsessed with VR at 15. His first move wasn't building — it was reading: old patents from the 80s and 90s, academic papers, military research reports. He wanted to download "everything about what worked and what didn't" into his brain. Then came the buying spree. Back then, old VR headsets were dirt cheap because, in his words, he was "probably the only guy in the whole world collecting them." On eBay, shutting-down medical facilities were unloading headsets from late-90s research trials — gear they'd bought for literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, which he picked up for less than a hundred. He amassed a stash of them, then took them apart one batch at a time, studying each failure: why was the field of view so narrow, the latency so high, the rig so heavy and expensive? He funded it by fixing and reselling broken iPhones plus part-time jobs — at least $36,000 in all — and went on to build more than 50 headsets of his own. His sixth-generation prototype got a name: the Oculus Rift. In August 2012 he took it to Kickstarter: $250,000 goal, hit in about two hours, closed at $2.4 million. In March 2014, Facebook announced the $2 billion acquisition of Oculus. After leaving Facebook in 2017, he founded defense-tech company Anduril — valued at $61 billion in its May 2026 round. Why does this work? Most people study success. He dissected failure. Success tells you one road works; failure tells you where the boundaries are. Tear down decades of dead ends, and what's left is the road nobody has walked. Have you ever studied the failures in your industry? #TopMinds #SecretHabits #PalmerLuckey Portrait: Xuthoria (via Wikimedia Commons) | CC BY-SA 4.0 (adaptation permitted). The Hidden Habits of Top Minds EP33: Bernie Marcus Here's a counterintuitive one: the founder of Home Depot only started his company after getting fired in 1978. Bernie Marcus co-founded Home Depot. In April 1978, he and his partner Arthur Blank were fired from the Handy Dan chain in a corporate power struggle. For most people, that's the end of a career. For the two of them, it was the beginning — they sketched out a business designed to leapfrog the entire industry. Marcus told the story himself: in 1978 America, a homeowner who wanted to fix up his house had to run to a plumbing store, an electrical store, a lumber store, a hardware store — prices were high, so you hired a professional. Their idea: open one store big enough to hold every category, at prices significantly lower, staffed with real plumbers and electricians who would teach homeowners to do it themselves. The logic: save American homeowners money, and build a great business at the same time. On June 22, 1979, the first two stores opened in Atlanta. Eleven years later, Home Depot was America's largest home-improvement chain; today it has more than 2,300 stores and over 470,000 associates. Marcus's own words came true: "We actually changed America." Why does this work? Most people treat getting fired as a verdict. Marcus treated it as a business license. Forty-nine wasn't too late — it was exactly right. He knew the industry well enough to know exactly what was wrong with it. Have you ever been "fired" by life? What happened next? #TopMinds #SecretHabits #BernieMarcus Portrait: The Galloway School | CC BY 4.0. Source: License: Modifications: circular crop and resize for cover and title card.
