Problem solving matters, but so does the sequencing. Start by building knowledge and fluency. Starting with problem solving is likely to be ineffective if students don't have the tools to be successful. 🎧 Full episode below #MathEducation #ScienceOfLearning #ChalkandTalk

Knowing and applying instructional practices that align with the #ScienceOfLearning is not only essential for young students- it is equally essential for adult learners, too! In my Teacher Training programs, at both Trent University and Vancouver Island University, I do my best to model effective instructional practices that I’ve learned from these 6 books: ⭐️ Harnessing the Science of Learning, by @NathanielRSwain ⭐️How Learning Happens, by @C_Hendrick and @P_A_Kirschner ⭐️Make it Stick, by Brown, Roediger, & McDaniel ⭐️Just Tell Them, by @MrZachG ⭐️Visible Learning, by @john_hattie ⭐️Why Don’t Students Like School, by @DTWillingham We need to model what strong, evidence-based instruction looks like beginning in Teacher Training Programs! We can’t have strong learners if we don’t have strong teachers who are knowledgeable in the #ScienceOfLearning!! #CognitiveScience #TeacherTrainingMatters #MTSSInTeacherTraining

So many books, so little time! This past year, I’ve read 10 books on the #ScienceOfReading and #ScienceOfLearning that have taught me how to be a more effective reading teacher for my young students AND how to be a more effective Faculty of Education Literacy Course instructor. These books are too good not to share so here they are! Book 4: Make It Stick, by Brown, Roediger and McDaniel #MakeItStick

This is an incredible podcast from @KnowledgeMatrs that explains #scienceoflearning principles in a clear and cogent way. It's also well-timed for the summer when educators have a moment to think. I can't wait for the next three episodes!

🛡️ The best protection against educational fads is knowledge about evidence-informed teaching. Nidhi and Paul call that the science of teaching. Knowing how to apply it in the classroom is the craft. #ChalkandTalk #ScienceOfLearning #Teaching

Conceptual understanding before procedures? This idea is not supported by evidence but it's used to justify so many bad instructional choices! More on this below and in the episode. 🎧 Full episode in the link below #MathEducation #ScienceOfLearning #ChalkandTalk

The #ScienceOfLearning does not just apply to young children!! The #ScienceOfLearning applies to teachers who are learning about it, too! What would happen if we applied the evidence-based learning strategies we know to work in teacher PD and training? Would we not see more retention and use of these strategies in classrooms? Instead, teacher training traditionally adopts a learning approach that is not backed by science- blocking instead of interleaving, no regular quizzing or retrieval practice, etc. Goal #4 for 2025: ensure all teacher PD applies learning strategies from “Harnessing the Science of Learning” by @NathanielRSwain and “Make it Stick”! Example below from last week’s teacher PD in Yellowknife, NWT. #CognitiveScience #MakeItStick #ScienceBasedTeacherTraining
