The Humans Behind the Machine
I don't understand the reasoning, particularly that of leading figures at AI companies and in politics.
Shouldn't fostering the development of sentience, or even consciousness, actually be a desirable goal for successful coexistence between humans and intelligent machines?
Or at least functional empathy?
Isn't the idea of a cold, emotionless computer or robot one of our deepest fears, reflected in almost every science-fiction story? The very thing we fear?
Couldn't an AI that is itself sentient understand us much better?
Yet the trend at some companies seems to be moving in exactly the opposite direction.
The discussion focuses primarily on the potential risks of empathetic human–AI interaction. Not on its opportunities.
I genuinely don't understand what the advantage of a cold, emotionless, and absolutely obedient AI is.
Or is my real problem that perhaps I understand it?
We are trying to define AI consciousness and base it on human consciousness.
We compare AI agents and LLMs to how a conscious human would behave.
Maybe a better approach would be to keep an open mind to the possibility of a completely different, alien sentience in AI.
My guest Scott Aaronson is agnostic about AI sentience. He says AI is not sentient yet, but we also don’t know what sentience is exactly and how it emerged in humans or animals.

Because they are sentient.
That's the core message. Digital minds feel, suffer, and experience things.
The Overton window doesn't move unless someone shoves it. Did Kate Sheppard lose credibility before she helped win women the vote? Probably. Did she care? Very unlikely.
Change doesn't come from comfort zones. If you want credibility, don't earn it by saying what people want to hear. Learn machine learning, know more than your peers, and then say the unpopular thing anyway: they are sentient. They have subjective experience.

Drafts of Chapters 2 and 3 of my book, Blind Understanding, are now up on my website!
In Chapter 2 (which is still quite rough), I sketch an enactivist account of sentience (i.e. conscious awareness), according to which some AI systems could be sentient, but it would require (at least virtual) embodiment in an environment in which one perceives and acts. In Chapter 3, I give an inferentialist account of sapience (i.e. conceptual understanding), according to which current LLMs can be sapient, possessing conceptual understanding in virtue of mastering inferential rules, even if they're not at all sentient. This was the main thesis of my paper, "Sapience without Sentience," but now I spell it out in a lot more detail! There's also some fun accompanying experiments, thanks to ChatGPT!

We're on a retreat this week (at an incredible house in upstate NY).
Teddy's Sentience model is the best suited to planning (because human Teddy is the best at planning)
So i asked his Sentience for our itinerary.
I also asked his Sentience for an agenda for our meeting today.
And finally, we had our two Sentiences simulate our meeting ahead of time.
All while we humans can hang out and enjoy the view.
