HBO’s #Task has me thinking about how much I love the limited series format. The limited series combines the best of TV & cinema: it’s long enough to really get attached to the show’s characters but short enough for the story to have a memorable conclusion. Here are the 10 Best Limited Series I’ve ever seen, ranked. Toss your boy a @letterboxd follow for more:1652153.6K258K

Last night’s series finale of #Task (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) solidified this show as one of the great miniseries in the history of HBO. For all the guns, knives, and drugs, my takeaway is that Task is a story about forgiveness. Not just a story about forgiving those around us or forgiving the broken system that engulfs us in bullshit: it’s about forgiving ourselves & choosing to move forward in life. Featuring Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey, this show’s two lead actors put their entire heart and soul into this project. I tip my hat to every last individual involved in bringing one of the year’s best projects to life. The theme of forgiveness is demonstrated perfectly through this show’s two main characters: Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) and Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey). Tom is a man who can forgive. Robbie is a man who cannot. This is what ultimately separates and defines our two protagonists. It’s also what drives this plot forward. Ultimately, I think there are a few moments throughout the 7 episodes of Task that illustrate this dichotomy perfectly. The first moment is one that takes place between Maeve (Emilia Jones) and Robbie, whereby Maeve tells Robbie that he has far more to lose than he could possibly imagine. Mark Ruffalo’s Tom tells Robbie this later in the show as well. They were right. And the reason Robbie couldn’t see just how much he had to lose is because he couldn’t forgive the world- the universe- after everything that happened to his brother. He couldn’t let go. Which is so fucking heartbreaking. Had Robbie taken a step back and realized none of this was worth it, none of this was going to bring his brother back, and all of this was going to jeopardize Robbie’s own life…so much heartbreak would’ve been avoided. The second moment that illustrates the key theme of forgiveness here is when Ruffalo’s Tom explains to his colleague Anthony Grasso (Fabien Frankel) that confession isn’t about God. Tom, now an FBI agent, was once a priest. And he’s explaining to Grasso that confession is not about appeasing someone higher than us or gaining someone’s approval. Confession is about the person confessing & about dealing with the shame of the sins that person committed. In other words, confession isn’t about God forgiving the sinner. It’s about the sinner forgiving himself. I am not a religious person, but this sequence- this delivery from Ruffalo- hit me right in the mother fucking chest. This sequence is also a reminder that whether you like him or not on a personal level, Mark Ruffalo is quite literally one of the best working actors alive. Good storytelling uses themes like forgiveness and incorporates them fluidly and naturally into a plot that knows exactly where it’s headed. That is what Task achieves here. Every last actor is excellent. All of the writing is exceptional. The production could not be better. This is one of those shows that slaps you across the face with inspiration and forces you to get off your ass and do something with your life. I’m so glad I watched this & I’m so glad HBO made this. Task is all-time great limited series.572772.4K254K
