1/ Sports Scientists often criticise how other sports train. We hear things like "why do swimmers train such huge volumes compared to runners racing similar durations?" It’s not just coaching tradition & culture; it's about physiological & biomechanical demands 🧵👇#SportsScience

11/ Forward propulsion in swimming, cycling, kayaking & rowing is mostly concentric; metabolically driven. Running adds eccentric loading, with stretch-shortening cycle & elastic energy contributing ~50% to propulsion. So metabolic training is more crucial in non-running sports🔋

12/ These factors help explain training differences. Swimmers & cyclists log big volumes to prioritise aerobic endurance & fatigue resistance. Whilst still critical in running, runners log lower mileage, with a relatively stronger emphasis on speed & power 📈#TrainingVolume
