#UPDATE: Former Spanish Minister of Employment and Social Security Fátima Báñez, 59, has been killed in the deadly train collision in Toledo, Spain.
Báñez was reportedly traveling aboard the IRYO train to a business conference in Seville when the collision occurred. She was the president of the CEOE Foundation, an organization representing Spain’s business community.
At least 68 people have been killed and 80 injured in the disaster. Rescue crews are STILL searching for survivors as emergency operations continue.
Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a computer malfunction at approximately 8:30 a.m. caused a railway safety system to fail, forcing trains on a 63-kilometer (39-mile) stretch of track to stop.
Despite the failure, a state railway control center authorized a RENFE train to resume moving without speed restrictions. At approximately 8:53 a.m., it collided with the stationary Iryo train near Urda, in Toledo province.
Puente called the decision to allow the train to proceed “inexplicable,” saying it should never have been given permission to move while a stop signal remained active. He said the train should at least have been ordered to travel at a reduced speed.
The minister said investigators were still examining the train’s speed, which could have reached 200 kph (124 mph).
“I am not attributing responsibility to anyone, I am just stating the facts,” Puente said.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and authorities are working to identify victims as the search for survivors continues.

#UPDATE: Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente says the train crash was caused by an “inexplicable” decision by the central command center for Spain’s trains after a security system failed.
Puente said that at 8:30 a.m., the security system on a stretch of 63 kilometers (39 miles) stopped working due to a computer malfunction, causing all trains on that stretch to stop.
But the central command center told the RENFE train to start running again without any speed restrictions, and it ended up colliding with the stopped IRYO train at 8:53 a.m.
Puente said the train should never have been told to start moving again since there was still a “stop signal” active on that line. And if it had been allowed to move, it should at least have been told to travel at a reduced speed.
“I am not attributing responsibility to anyone, I am just stating the facts,” Puente said.

DETAILS:
#UPDATE: The suspect who killed Van Zandt County Deputy Adam Sherifi fired MORE THAN 800 ROUNDS at responding officers during Tuesday night's deadly shootout in Texas.
According to Sheriff Kevin Bridger, Deputy Sherifi was helping Canton police serve a warrant on a suspect wanted for two serious felonies: aggravated assault and aggravated assault of a peace officer.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Mi Van Nguyen, opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle from inside his home. Deputy Sherifi was killed, and Canton Police Officer Chris Watson was wounded and remains hospitalized.
Nguyen was later found dead inside the home from a gunshot wound. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.
The sheriff also commended Deputy Brandon Fontenot for his lifesaving actions that night. Fontenot returned fire and risked his life to help reach Deputy Sherifi and Officer Watson while they were wounded.
Deputy Sherifi leaves behind a wife and a newborn baby. His family, friends, and fellow officers gathered to honor his life and service.
RIP, Deputy Adam Sherifi.
🚨 PRAYERS PLEASE for Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Sherifi, who was killed in the line of duty Tuesday night, just weeks after celebrating his 31st birthday.
Adam leaves behind the woman he loved, Kyleigh, and their three children, including a baby born just last month. His youngest will grow up with no memories of their daddy, and all three children will have to face life without the father who should have been there to watch them grow up.
Behind that badge was a man whose family meant everything to him.
Kyleigh shared a heartbreaking tribute to Adam, remembering his courage, kindness, and the love he had for those around him.
“You were brave, you were strong, and you were kind. You laughed hard and you loved harder.”
She shared how proud she was of him and how grateful she would always be for the memories they made together.
“I know you are in a better place now and watching over me and your babies.”
Adam was helping serve felony warrants at a home south of Canton, Texas, when authorities say someone inside opened fire. Adam was killed, another officer was wounded.
Please keep Kyleigh, their three children, Adam’s family, his fellow deputies, and the wounded Canton police officer in your prayers. This family has an unimaginable road ahead of them.
RIP, Deputy Sherifi. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. 🙏
