Every little detail adds up when you are running a small business with leverage. YTD, my business is tracking for its best revenue year since I closed in late 2022. Cool right? Well in a relative competitive industry, gross margins are tight as I have bigger competitors in NYC with more expensive equipment. My competitive advantage is that I do the job of 5 people like the seller while my labor costs are lower as I’m able to pull blue collar labor in lower cost areas in New Jersey than my competitors as I’m not located in NYC / Brooklyn. That said my competitors in Pennsylvania have lower labor costs. Cash flow dollars will be up over last year but below 2024 levels as margins are compressing due to resin costs exploding due to the Iran conflict. Resin is up almost 70 pct this year. Gross margins are down 3 pct from 2024 levels which seems small but 3 pct on $3mm or $5mm revenues is $90k-$150k. Assuming $1mm ballpark EBITDA that’s a decent headwind to EBITDA. Layer on floating debt with rates higher than 2024, you can see how a few cuts can impact cash flow in a big way. Job mix has been lower margin too this year as some of my high margin pharma biz was slower this year and was offset by lower margin apparel bag revenues. Repair costs on equipment are the highest they have ever been. We have spent $70k on equipment repairs this year vs the normal $20-30k a year. My strength going into this biz ownership adventure was my balance sheet from my W2 years and my finance background so I’ve extended payable days while paying off 7 figures of debt and refinancing personally guaranteed SBA debt w a 10 year amortization at 8.50 pct with a 6.25 interest only pledge asset line. My monthly payment has gone from $33k a month to $8k which has helped offset my rising costs in rent, resin and utilities (up 50 pct since close). Revenue solves all so I have spending energy with my sales guy going after big pieces of business. Im working on a potentially monthly recurring $80k piece of business. This inflation situation for small business has been an incredible challenge. Seeing your biggest raw input almost double is brutal. It seems like another 3 cents going through this month in resin after 5 cents last month. Last year, tariffs and a customer shutting down punched me in the mouth. This year resin has made a dent in cash flow. If I didn’t stare at every vendor invoice and work on extending payable days, liquidity would be challenged. Today I asked for a quote for some printer cartridges we buy for suffocation warning prints for apparel bags. The quoted price was 30 pct higher than when we bought in June. I screamed at Dover corporation - my account manager called me back and said they forgot to extend the discount program past June so the price increase should only be 5 pct. On a $10k purchase that’s a big difference. I negotiated my biz insurance down $4k this year. I am moving money to Schwab so I can save another 50bps on interest rates. It feels like my day is spent doing $5k projects when a CEO should be working on 6-7 figure type of work, but I’m learning 4 years in that doing the $5k work consistently on everything adds up. It’s not that much fun, but it’s allowed me to survive a pretty nasty manufacturing backdrop the last 3 years. Sir, let's start with your argument about 114 years of momentum. You say your position is anchored in science, but the age of an organisation isn't a scientific measure of momentum. In physics, momentum has a specific meaning, and even metaphorically, momentum isn't necessarily a good thing. A runaway train heading straight for a cliff has momentum too!😭 The fact that something has existed for 114 years doesn't automatically mean it's moving in the right direction, or that we should preserve its political power regardless of the consequences. Then there's the claim that no other political party has written better founding objectives than the ANC. But according to whose scholarly assessment, and measured against what criteria? More importantly, what exactly are we evaluating here? The quality of a political party's founding documents or its ability to govern? Because beautiful manifestos don't fix potholes, supply clean water, keep the lights on or maintain sewage infrastructure. Surely, in 2026, we should be evaluating @MYANC on its actual record of governance rather than continuously referring to its founding ideals of 1912. the comparison of fixing the ANC to a medical operation that removes cancer is also interesting. Yes, doctors remove cancerous tissue every day, but the success of an operation depends on the nature and extent of the disease. What happens when corruption, patronage, cadre deployment and factional battles are so deeply embedded in an organisation that they're no longer isolated problems? At what point do we acknowledge that removing a few individuals doesn't necessarily resolve the institutional dysfunction that enabled them in the first place? You can't keep treating symptoms while refusing to examine the underlying disease. And the fact that surgery is possible doesn't mean every operation is successful. Now, about respecting the price of building something. I agree that the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle deserve recognition. But respecting those sacrifices doesn't mean granting the political organisation associated with them a permanent entitlement to govern. Those sacrifices were made for freedom, dignity and democratic rights, including the right to hold governments accountable and remove them through elections. In fact, I'd argue that holding the ANC accountable is a far greater tribute to those who fought for democracy than defending it regardless of its performance. The ANC's historical contribution to South Africa's liberation is undeniable, but historical significance and present-day governing competence are two entirely different things. One does not automatically establish the other. And that's really where your argument loses me. You're asking people to evaluate a political party through the lens of its history, its founding intentions and its supposed institutional momentum, while I'm asking a much simpler question... After all these years in government, what has it actually delivered, where has it failed, and why should its historical achievements exempt it from the political consequences of those failures? You say you're far from sentimental and that your argument is scientific and scholarly, but invoking scientific terminology doesn't automatically make an argument scientific. Likewise, describing an opinion as scholarly doesn't establish its validity. Both require evidence, appropriate methods and reasoning that can withstand scrutiny. We don't need another lecture about how long @MYANC has existed or how admirable its founding objectives were. We need functioning municipalities, reliable services, accountable leadership and institutions that serve the public. I would love nothing more than for this to be a miraculous ploy to expose voter fraud instead of trying to fast track election integrity. With how everything has gone it feels like nothing more than a pipe dream.
