@EdWriters @CurriculumMatrs @educationweek @achievethecore @ReadingShanahan @MJLiben @CareySSwanson This piece by @SarahDSparks, highlighting the lack of an evidence base for leveled reading group work (which is pervasive), provides a fab entry point. I must've tweeted it 1,000 times. Cheers to Sarah for the piece! Addl. stories needed. (3/thread)

Thanks partly to @natwexler's #KnowledgeGap, there's attention to that issue. No one's writing about leveled reading group shortcoming (since @s_e_schwartz). It's the Crickets Category for coverage... of something in 75%+ of K–5 ELA classrooms.

Kids suffer when comprehension is reduced to "skills," but that was happening BEFORE testing & Common Core. In places where educators have seen the actual intent behind Common Core, there's been a shift to building knowledge. More in my book The #KnowledgeGap, due out 8/6.

How kids suffer when we teach reading comprehension & critical thinking, and ignore content acquisition. Kids need to learn stuff to stimulate curiosity & intrinsic motivation. ⁦@DTWillingham⁩ said this for years. Common Core & testing are to blame.

Poor reading comprehension isn’t an issue of skills (inferencing) it’s gaps in knowledge. Content rich nonfiction texts (science/social studies) supported by teacher-led discussions, starting in kinder, will improve reading comp. 🍎#SoR #scienceofreading @natwexler #knowledgegap
