NYT: The 11 Midterm Races That Could Shape the Progressive Movement’s Future
The left says its populist message can attract moderates and conservatives in addition to liberals. That theory will be put to the test in a series of competitive races on Election Day

.@ChicagosMayor calls his new budget a "tax on the rich," which is precisely what his base wants to hear.
But why, then, does it include a 15-cent tax on Chicagoans' package deliveries, millions more in automated parking tickets, and a 20% tax on the software local small businesses use (and will inevitably be passed onto customers)?
Chicago's progressive political leadership defiantly refuses to cut spending, so Brandon Johnson's administration is instead decorating new, sweeping tax hikes with populist-left branding, which will of course hit every neighborhood in the city.
The most lamentable part of this schtick is that further burdening the city's small businesses (and Chicagoans broadly) will not even mathematically fix the city's $882 million deficit.
...But it *can* drive more jobs out of the city!
At what point does Chicago City Council step in and demand real spending reforms?

Politico: AOC Defies GOP Boogeyman Expectations
Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez is defying Republicans’ midterm boogeyman expectations, according to none other than Republicans themselves.
The progressive standard bearer’s final midterm blitz through Nevada, Maine, Michigan and Florida showcase appeal that’s “better than a lot of politicians,” said a senior Republican operative working on midterm races… “Better than most Republicans.”

STEVENS: “Look, I'm on the Democratic ticket. I can't say that I agree with everything that's gone on… I'm looking to be on the team to support my next governor Jocelyn Benson, and frankly these great Democrats who are working their tails off, who are going to make Hakeem Jeffries the first black Speaker of the House.”
BASH: “You didn't mention Abdul El-Sayed in that last answer.”
STEVENS: “Well, look, I would just say, you had asked me if I'm still on the team, I'm on the team.”

BREAKING: GET HIS ASS! Rep. Ilhan Omar destroys Trump after he smeared her name — and JD Vance gets dragged right into the mud!
By now, they should know better than to mess with her...
"The pedophile protection party’s president is laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt DOJ in American history," Omar wrote on X.
"Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine. So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar," she added. "Maybe you should focus on what your VP’s real name is."
She was responding to a hateful, lie-filled Truth Social rant from Trump in which he repeated some of the usual right-wing fever dream conspiracies about Omar, including that she supposedly changed her name and married her brother. Absurdly, he called for the well-liked congresswoman to "IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress."
Omar's response was pitch perfect, because she refused to be pulled into the weeds on Trump's blatant misinformation and instead redirected attention to the fact that this White House is actively covering up the Epstein files.
On top of that, Vance actually did change his name. He was born "James Donald Bowman," was later renamed "James David Hamel" by his mother, and then eventually changed his name to Vance. His constantly shifting name is appropriate for a reptilian-like man who will pretend to believe in anything to get closer to power. He's a slippery, slimy little creature.
Meanwhile, Ilhan Omar is a staunch advocate for her constituents and a fearless progressive who actually wants to improve this country, unlike these MAGA crooks who only want to enrich themselves and obscure their crimes.
This is all so incredibly transparent. Trump is attacking Omar because his popularity is in the toilet and he knows that going after a Black, Muslim, immigrant woman will play well with his base. It doesn't matter that his accusations are untrue, his bigoted supporters will gobble them up. Unfortunately for him, it won't be enough to win in the midterms!
Please ❤️ and share if you stand with Ilhan Omar!
Making civic duty a family affair! Picked up my youngest after her class last Thursday so we could go vote together for her first time. Locked in 3 progressive votes from our family in this deep red state. So proud of the next generation! 💙🌊💙
5. Not a huge sample, but the most conspicuously out-of-consensus "polls" that Wedgewood did involved strong numbers for progressive candidates, i.e. Troy Jackson, Abdul El-Sayed and Francesca Hong.
ECUADOR 🇪🇨 Luisa González, the former presidential candidate of Revolución Ciudadana, has been arrested on bogus allegations.
This escalation of authoritarianism follows President Noboa’s move to bar González and the biggest opposition party from contesting November’s elections.
This is way more than @ElissaSlotkin's demand of fealty and obedience to @TheDemocrats /Deep State alliance - this is about the fact that she simply spoke the truth about the totalitarian thinking and punishment for thinking differently than the Progressive Left...
She cannot be allowed to continue to hold power...nor can the Democrats...

We have two good candidates for Congress in San Francisco, but I'm voting for @Scott_Wiener. He's been a tireless fighter for the city, first as a supervisor and then in the State Senate. He takes climate change and clean energy seriously, and he's focused on bringing down costs for Californians.

Former President Barack Obama endorsed Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon, progressive Democrat from Jacksonville, in her U.S. Senate race against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, 10 days before the election.
"Angie has spent her career standing up for you," Obama says in a video released by her campaign. He added that they "both started as organizers in our communities."
Today, I’m honored to share that President Obama is supporting our campaign for the U.S. Senate.
President @BarackObama & I both started as organizers in our communities, because we immediately understood that real changes come from regular folks joining the fight.

JOHNSON'S LEFT JAB: House Speaker Mike Johnson warned in an interview Monday that the Democrat Party has moved dramatically to the left ahead of the midterm elections.
"This is not our father's Democrat Party," Johnson said.
Johnson argued that the party has increasingly embraced progressive policies and warned voters about the potential consequences of Democrats regaining control of Congress in November.
