john gerrardRT @Fountainxyz: The first major solo exhibition presented exclusively on a web browser on LACMA’s homepage is SPIRITS by @john__gerrard. Today, on the Autumn Equinox, the final 24 new works will be revealed, hour by hour. This marks the final event of a year-long exhibition that also featured a SPIRITS SUMMER SOLSTICE DANCE at @LACMA in June. Fountain is proud to be among the digital art organizations that helped support the event. SPIRITS will be available for private placement. Reach out to @C0DYEDIS0N for more info.07015
john gerrardRT @LACMA: john gerrard: SPIRITS → now open @john__gerrard collected 96 worn plastic sandals from beaches around the world, each carrying unknown stories of the people who wore them, and turned them into evocative digital sculptures using “gaussian splats.” This is the final installment of a year-long artwork meant to be experienced in the browser and on your phone, where you can interactively unfold a story of the 20th century oil age. The pieces reveal themselves during four 24-hour events tied to the solstices and equinoxes. One spirit rises every hour on LACMA’s homepage, beginning on the first day of autumn, September 22. SPIRITS, a year-long artwork series at @LACMA, suggests that data and information may not solve the climate crisis, but a critical vision may.👇🧵0408
john gerrardRT @fellowshiptrust: Are touchscreens the next art frontier? Digital pioneer @john__gerrard thinks so - via @ArtBasel "As his yearlong @LACMA web commission culminates on this autumn equinox, the artist muses on screens as an exhibition platform and on why AI still can’t replicate experience Artist john gerrard is known for building real-time virtual worlds and simulations – on view in public space and often centered on energy, power, and ecology – using game-engine technology. Since winter 2025, his project SPIRITS – 96 software 'art worlds' each built around a lost plastic shoe he found on the shores of the Pacific, Indian, Mediterranean, or Atlantic and transformed into a 3D image called a Gaussian splat – has unfolded across the landing page of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in four movements. By touching their screens, viewers can spin infinitely variable stories within these 'worlds.' 'Each 'ocean' was released on for 24 hours – a new work every hour from midnight till midnight – to coincide with a solar event: 'Pacific' on the winter solstice in 2025, 'Indian' in spring 2026, 'Mediterranean' in June alongside a solstice rave with techno DJ Richie Hawtin under LACMA's new David Geffen Galleries, and now 'Atlantic.' As the piece's final chapter goes online, Gerrard writes in his own words about the work, and speculates on our networked age's many potentials." To read the full article, visit the link below08010
john gerrardRT @drmiminguyen: Some works don't belong on a wall. They belong online, running in real time, exhibited on the website itself, rendered live from code. @john__gerrard’s takeover of LACMA website is the best “exhibition” true to its medium. I haven’t been to LA for 20 years now and yet I can engage with the work in its truest form without flying 5.5k miles 🖤06013
Today is the day, this Autumn Equinox @lacma are presenting SPIRITS (Atlantic) live on the front page of from midnight to midnight on Pacific Standard Time. Check it out.39442.8K
Tomorrow, Autumn Equinox, Tuesday 22nd September, on the hour from midnight to midnight on Pacific Standard Time, Los Angeles County Museum of Art @LACMA will premiere the last set of SPIRITS art works, derived from plastic sandals collected on the Moroccon Atlantic shore. A new work takes over the museum front web page to allow a global public to interact, building infinitely variable worlds in sound and image through touch on both desktop and handheld devices. With the release of its final chapter, SPIRITS is now viewable in its entirety at through December 21, 2026, when the work closes on the one-year anniversary of its opening.5177311.4K
Posts @john__gerrard“Autumn begins again with oil, but in a raw form, then rising through the life forms that produced that material, into the ocean, light prism and finally into nothingness, accompanied by a realtime granular synthesis score.” john gerrard “Part of SPIRITS power lies in that it unfolds as a kind of clock, marking time through the movement of the sun, the changing of seasons, and the material history of our dependence on petroleum,” says Joel Ferree, Art + Technology Lab, LACMA. SPIRITS uses @WebGL, Babylon.js, Tone.js, and gaussian splatting technologies and is presented by LACMA's Art + Technology Lab.105171

john gerrardRT @neort_io: John Gerrard @john__gerrard "SPIRITS (Summer Solstice)" (2026) 96 plastic sandals and shoes collected from beaches around the world, photoscanned in Gaussian splatting and turned into virtual sculptures. Each carries the untold story of whoever once wore it. Unlike video or conventional 3D scanning, SPIRITS is rendered live: the sculptures exist only in the moment they are streamed to the device. At NEORT++, SPIRITS #72, released at the summer solstice, resonates with the white limestone sand gathered in the space.03018
