So happy that my main PhD project on HIV-1 nuclear entry is now out in Cell. I want to especially thank my supervisor Martin @Beck_Laboratory and our amazing collaborators @MaziarHeidari1 from @HummerLab, @VojtechZila from the Kräusslich lab and many others.

Fresh out of the press! ✨Check out our new paper on the violent entry of the HIV capsid into the nuclear pore — watch it crack that gate! 🤯 💥 Incredible work from @Beck_Laboratory and @HummerLab 🤩 More here: 🔗

RT @Beck_Laboratory: Did you know that nuclear pore complexes can turn up outside the nuclear envelope? Studying these, @JennySachweh, Bernhard Hampoelz and others uncover that the surrounding cellular milieu determines NPC composition via the nuclear transport system itself. #teamtomo #NPC A 🧵

Great systematic study by Maarten Tuijtel from our group on how FIB-lamellae properties can affect subtomogram averaging results. The main message is quite positive for anyone worried about lamella thickness and/or ion damage. #teamtomo @Beck_Laboratory @MPIbp

Template matching NPC ring subunits in cryo tomograms has emerged very recently thanks to works by @SergioCruzLeon1 and @Reiya_Tan1guch1 We can now look at the structures of individual NPCs and are no longer limited to averages.

Very happy that our work on HIV nuclear entry is now out as a preprint. Check out the thread for a summary. The most surprising finding was that the capsid appears to crack the NPC scaffold as revealed by cryo-ET and template matching. #teamtomo

In a great collaboration with @HummerLab and the Kräusslich lab, @jpkreysing, @MaziarHeidari1, @VojtechZila and others tackle what happens when HIV capsid goes through an NPC. Instead of the NPC cracking the capsid, the capsid appears to crack the NPC (@MPIbp @CiidHeidelberg).

Great to see this method out as a preprint now. It has been an invaluable tool for me over the last months.

🧵[1/6] We achieve high-confidence localization of a wide range of macromolecular complexes, their subunits, and functional substates through 3D template matching (TM) for #CryoET. This allows us to capture vaults transporting ribosomal cargo in situ!🤯

RT @MPIbp: Scientists from our @Beck_Laboratory have visualized the structural dynamics of ribosomes in human cells for the first time. Using #cryoET, they generated 3D images of ribosomes in action & deciphered the target site & mode of action of a leukemia drug 👉
