RT @micsolana: david sabatini is one of the brightest scientists in america. years after a fake rape accusation shattered his life and career, he sued his accuser and won. he discussed the details of this shocking story with @neerajadeshp for pirate wires:
    Pirate Wires @PirateWires
Former MIT scientist David Sabatini just won $6 million in a landmark case against false allegations of r*pe and sexual assault, which destroyed his career. Once on track to win the Nobel Prize, Sabatini’s ex-girlfriend accused him of r*pe in 2020 and began calling him the ‘Weinstein of science.’ He was later accused of perpetuating a “bro culture” in his lab. As a result, he was stripped of all his funding, lost his job, and went bankrupt. We interviewed Sabatini (@DMSabatini) about the verdict, which he says made him “proud to be an American.” @neerajadeshp reports 👇

RT @alaskalandmine: BREAKING: Sen @lisamurkowski just provided the Landmine with this powerful statement following the @nytimes scathing article on @MaryPeltola’s involvement in the Decoy Dan Sullivan scheme: “While some may try to write this off as just how politics works now, ballot-stacking should have no place in our electoral process. Run and win on your merits: your views, your policy ideas, and your accomplishments. By contrast, recruiting candidates to manipulate the field and influence voting outcomes is simply wrong. Alaskans deserve the honest truth from Mary and her campaign—what has been revealed is a pattern of lies and coverups and a culture of deception that belongs nowhere in our elections or among our elected officials.”

RT @sarahcbedford: A key question here is what sort of "things," if any, were provided to the two spoiler candidates in exchange for the help they are giving the Peltola campaign and what the monetary value of those things was.

Would that the Peltola staffer asked to find random Dan Sullivans for the purpose of screwing with Alaska voters had been as precious about their time and dignity as the one asked to feed the damn lizard.

SCOOP: Democrats have insisted they have nothing to do with the other Dan Sullivan on Alaska's Senate ballot. But aides with the Mary Peltola campaign and DSCC were part of a monthslong secret plan to recruit him to run -- as well as other candidates.

Let's talk about a longtime DC resident who owned a property for which she was unable to collect rent, and whether we think what she went through is just. Veronica Hegens, 59, bought a row house in DC many years ago. Smart investment, right? She lived in it for years until she decided to rent it out when she had to move in with her own father to care for him. Hegens is a retired Army major. At first, her renter, a participant in the city's voucher program, worked out fine. Most of his rent was paid by the city's taxpayers ($2,600/month). Her renter then notified her he would vacate. All good, Hegens was prepared to find another tenant. But the renter died shortly before his move-out date. Upon his unexpected death, Hegens discovered his girlfriend, who had never signed a lease, was occupying the property with no intent to leave. DC's rules for what qualifies one as a "tenant" are lax, so a person without a lease occupying the apartment gets a lot of legal considerations. The girlfriend had not paid rent for 6 months at the time local news covered Hegens' plight. When Hegens, the owner of the property, changed the locks on the property, the girlfriend took her to court and received a temporary restraining order and was able to stay in the property. Hegens fell behind on her mortgage without rental income, was coming close to foreclosure, and became less and less able to make repairs due to financial strain and the girlfriend's obstinate occupancy. Hegens had to pay for court expenses and was charged fines by the city for not keeping up with her responsibilities while the unemployed girlfriend lived in her property. There are groups that give free legal services to people like the girlfriend. In March of 2026, Hegens and the girlfriend went to mandated mediation. The mediator told the girlfriend to vacate, but with ANOTHER 4 months to find new housing. She was asked to pay minimal rent during that time (about 1/5 of what the actual tenant had paid). The girlfriend finally moved out of the unit in June— a total of 9 months of zero or minuscule rent for Hegens on the property she owns. Hegens credits local news coverage with the resolution of her case in a relatively timely manner. A local advocate for small landlords says many such cases take more than a year to reach any kind of resolution.

Every year, thousands of DC residents lose their homes over unpaid rent. Most owe less than $5,000. Going to court is stressful for tenants, expensive for landlords, and slows down the system. We need a better way to resolve rent issues. 🧵⬇️

You may read an account more sympathetic to the girlfriend, here, and some of the court docs, as I did before writing this. It doesn't really dispute a lot in the account, but says she was grieving and after all, Hegens had other sources of income. Okay.

I feel like a retired Army major should own her property and the people living in it should pay rent to her and she should not have to go through almost a year in court and a PR campaign to get it back. But that's just me. I've had at least one friend deal with this in DC and the idea that the city laws are insufficiently helpful to tenants... was not the experience.

I'm just spitballing, but has anyone ever considered a policy that would just change the 6s in the credit scores to 8s? That would solve the problem without all this needless complication since the numbers carry no meaning or useful information.

Philadelphia is preparing to become the first city in the nation to offer this mortgage model, with lower interest rates, no private mortgage insurance, and credit scores as low as 620.

RT @ASFleischman: I fucking love body cams. I love them when they back up my client's story, and the cop is being a huge jerk, and the jury will never convict just because they hate the cop. And I love them when they wreck my client's story, and we enter a plea. Amazing tool.

I used to review officer-involved shooting reports generated by a D.A. explaining the decision to exonerate officers, and recall often thinking “I mean, could that *really* be how it went down?” I suspected there may be some fog of war or selective memory or post-hoc justification to give the officer a rational justification and paint the victim in a negative, irrational light. But with the post-2020 adoption of body cams, I now believe it all. There is no behavior too insane for a huge number of suspects when confronted with literally any command by an officer requesting some form of compliance. Even I thought body cams would shine a light on some substantial percentage of clear officer abuse, but it’s clearly negligible, while dangerous and erratic behavior by suspects is widespread. It is impossible to overstate how wrong BLM and reform activists were on this count.
