Hedgie @HedgieMarkets🦔Proton, the company behind ProtonMail and Proton VPN, told staff Monday it will “re-interview” employees about how they use AI, 404 Media reports. After the story spread, Proton posted a public statement that said it isn’t doing layoffs and is “actively hiring.” To be transparent, it also published the full email, which says the interviews “may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities, and continued employment.” My Take Proton published that email to calm people down, and it did the opposite. Proton can’t deny layoffs and then publish a memo that puts people’s jobs on the line in the same breath. Paying customers spotted the contradiction right away, and plenty of them said the statement pushed them closer to leaving than the original story did. I understand why Proton wants its staff to use AI, since every software company feels pressure to ship faster. But people pay for Proton because they want privacy and engineers who understand the code that guards their inbox. When those engineers have to prove their AI skills to keep their jobs, Proton sends the wrong signal to the customers it can least afford to lose. Shopify and Coinbase pushed AI on their staff last year, but neither one sells privacy. Proton’s customers will notice, and moving your email somewhere else isn’t hard anymore. Hedgie🤗
