How do US adversaries see the future of war? My theory of how the defense establishment is like youth soccer: It is like "the beevive" of little kid's soccer, all chasing the ball, while a few dig in the dirt and ignore everything going on around them. Then the ball goes out of bounds and a new ball is rolled onto the field and they go chase the ball in a different direction. Repeat. Substitute "ball" for COIN, counterterrorism, irregular warfare, great power conflict, AI, drones, etc.

It is "new domains" week in our @Future_of_War MA class. The questions we (and nations) are wrestling with: What should democratic governments do about the increasing weaponization of the information space against their military and population? What do you believe is the greatest risk in the weaponization of space? The new domains of conflict don't just involve non-military targets. Non-military personnel are increasingly engaged in either directly or indirectly engaged in warfighting actions and capabilities in these spaces. Are they now legitimate targets of war?  Provide your answers below

An honor to speak today at the 80th anniversary of the creation of the ONR @USNavyResearch Summary version: An evaluation of whether ONR met its original mandate from Congress back in 1946 "to plan, foster, and encourage scientific research in recognition of its paramount importance as related to the maintenance of future naval power, and the preservation of national security." Instead of using their org structure or budget, or single inventions like GPS, as the answer, I find there are five "lineages" of research clusters over the last 80 years, where ONR has made a crucial difference in 1) the wars of the past, 2) in operations today, and 3) likely will shape the future. These lineages (I gave them Mad Men like branding mottos) range from "Revealing the Hidden” (Sensor Improvement & Integration) to "Science’s Shield at the Edge" (Warfighter Protection, Materials, & Human Performance).
