Climate change

  1. World Meteorological Organization@WMO
Greenhouse gas levels hit new record highs, locking in more long-term temperature increase. The intensifying El Niño may lead to a further surge. New WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin provides authoritative scientific information on the state of our climate. 👉

Exceeding 1.5°C of warming is now unavoidable. But how much further temperatures rise depends on how quickly we cut emissions. The new #EmissionsGap Report shows how deep those cuts must be to limit warming and make a return to 1.5°C possible. Explore the findings:

Today, the greatest threat of extinction we face is not asteroids or climate change or disease or famine. It’s society’s refusal to heed the warnings of scientists.

🌡️It’s now certain: the world will exceed 1.5°C of warming, at least temporarily. That means even more intense weather extremes, fires, glacier melt and sea-level rise.   But we can still bring temperatures back down this century, and it will take going beyond net zero.   Net zero stops temperatures from rising. Going net negative, by removing more CO2 from the atmosphere than we emit, brings them back down.  The good news: we already know how to get there. The U.S was the world’s only major economy to see greenhouse gas emissions go up significantly last year. It happened as the Trump administration gutted pollution safeguards and forced dirty coal plants to stay running.

Current policies put the world on course for up to 2.8°C of warming this century. That means greater risk from extreme heat, floods and wildfires. But this future isn’t inevitable. Fast emissions cuts can limit warming and reduce risks to people and nature. More in the new #EmissionsGap report:
