Anyway, I'll leave you to do your own reading - although, if you like excitable takes on science stories like this, maybe you'd enjoy my newsletter? Also, let me say this very loudly: AS YOU CAN SEE, GEOLOGY IS NOT BORING. Thanks for reading. :)

RT @majamediaco: I'm fascinated by the rise of frictionmaxxing as a response to a frictionless life. We engineer away inconvenience, only to discover that some of the friction we removed was part of what made life feel alive in the first place
    Kristy Tillman @KristyT
Someone could probably write a book (if they haven’t already) about the cycle of technology productizing the removal of friction in the name of convenience only for us to discover that the friction was a load-bearing part of the social compact.

Here is a cat. His name is MR CHUMLEY-FLUFFLEBOBBINS, Lord Of The Mousing Brigade. I'm trying to get you interested in my newsletter: Also, this isn’t my cat. It’s a stock photo. That’s the kind of raw honesty you can expect from my work. Thx.

It's my birthday, & I have a massive discount on the paid version of my science newsletter - so, huge apologies, but I'm resharing my best sciencey threads, in the hope a few of you click through out of curiosity! (Can't believe I just said that.) First, THE BONGS!

OK, this is wild. In Sept 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was recorded in the Arctic. And Antarctica. Then everywhere, every 90 seconds, regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

A while back, I learned something mindblowing about the geological history of the Mediterranean Sea, and I just can't get it out of my head. Now I'm going to make it *your* problem too. Sorry. Hang onto your hat. This gets wild. 1/

Next, the world's mightiest waterfall, in maybe one of the last places you'd look:
    Mike Sowden @Mikeachim
This is Angel Falls in Venezuela, a 807-metre sheer plunge - the tallest waterfall on the planet... Hold on. Actually, it isn't. There's one that's MUCH bigger - & it's in the last place you'd think to look. If you don't have a head for heights, hang onto something! 1/

RT @Mikeachim: Sawyer Island, 6 miles away, had its trees & soil scoured right off it. Also like Greenland's, it formed a rhythmic standing wave of water, sloshing back & forth in the fjord - a "long-period global seismic signal" that travelled across the planet for the next 36 hours. 4/

I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it.

RT @Mikeachim: I recently posted about an incredible megatsunami in Greenland triggering an initially baffling 9-day seismic pulse across the whole planet - & the international collaborative scientific detective-work to decipher it. Now there's a sequel. And holy hell, it's even BIGGER? 1/

RT @Mikeachim: The atmospheric optical illusion known as a Light Pillar relies on ice crystals in the air, drifting slowly downwards. Most are flat & hexagonal, & most align themselves horizontally. It's like a slow rain of tiny trendy-restaurant dinner plates, made of ice... 5/

RT @Mikeachim: Here, the main culprit seems to be a vast glacial lake on England's coast ~450,000 years ago, trapped by a land-bridge (the Weald–Artois Anticline). When the water spilled over, the dam cracked. Up to a *million* cubic metres of water per second tore through the gap... 2/
