RT @DrBhrettMcCabe: Resilience isnโ€™t pretending the setback didnโ€™t hurt. Itโ€™s refusing to let the setback make your next decision for you.

    Growing Up Retro @GrowingUpRetro
Growing up in the 70s and 80s was basically one long lesson in figuring things out for yourself. Your bike chain fell off? Flip the bike upside down and fix it. Nobody explained the rules of a neighborhood football game. You learned them by arguing. A broken toy wasn't garbage. It was a challenge involving a screwdriver and your dad's toolbox. You memorized your best friend's phone number because there was nowhere else to store it. Getting lost in the woods meant finding your own way back. You learned to swim because somebody eventually convinced you to jump into the deep end. You settled arguments over whether a ball was fair or foul without instant replay. You learned how to make change because the cashier actually counted it back to you. And if you wanted to know how something worked, you took it apart and hoped you could put it back together. We weren't smarter than kids today. We weren't tougher just because we grew up without technology. But we were given something that's becoming harder to find. The freedom to figure things out. And the confidence that came from knowing we could.

Worth two minutes of your time to hear Jimmy Rogers lay bare one of the main ills facing big-time college sports and the athletes themselves. Iowa State Daily's @henry_annen asked Rogers what he needs from new AD Jared Benko to elevate Iowa State football. Good stuff.

Candlestick Park moments after the Loma Prieta earthquake struck โ€” Game 3 of the 1989 World Series, San Francisco, October 17, 1989. Above: fans and a police car on the field as the stadium evacuated. Below: Oakland Athletics including Mark McGwire (25) and Mike Gallego (9) waiting out the delay. At 5:04pm, minutes before first pitch, the 6.9-magnitude quake hit โ€” the first earthquake broadcast live on television, as ABC's Al Michaels was on air. The Series was suspended for 10 days; the A's swept the Giants in four when play resumed. 63 people died across the Bay Area. โšพ Al Michaels' "we're having an earthโ€”" โ€” most chilling live call ever? ๐Ÿ‘‡๏ธ

    BART @SFBART
When the Loma Prieta earthquake hit on Tuesday October 17, 1989, BART was put to the test like never before. Not only did service resume just a few hours after the quake, BART ran 24-hours a day, seven days a week for about a month while the Bay Bridge was closed.
