RT @DStrachman: The founding team of the Thiel Fellowship hosted a documentary crew for the first and second years of the fellowship, but very few people paid attention to our work then. See the comments for some early videos of teens who would go on to become tech titans. You'll catch a glimpse of what we saw and believed in before anyone else.

RT @regardthefrost: Exceptional talent is widely distributed. Permission to use it is not. We started the Thiel Fellowship to find extraordinary young people and give them the freedom to pursue ambitious ideas. Fifteen years later, see what they’ve built.

RT @tybernstein: Monthly landings are how we build a Moon Base – and beat China to it – but only if the hardware survives the two-week lunar night and accumulates into permanent infrastructure. Scaling radioisotope power makes that possible!

RT @jmrphy: After many false starts and delays, my book The Independent Scholar has now been typeset and is being emailed to all who preordered. Just about everyone today assumes that to produce a lasting body of work, one must pass through a "credible" institution and secure a certain kind of job, patron, publisher, or grant. But the historical record shows otherwise. Twas much harder than I anticipated, and I'm all too aware of its remaining imperfections, but overall I'm pleased with the result.

RT @1517fund: Claude has models named Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. But does poetry actually have anything to teach people building technology? We asked a 2E camper. Her answer went from creativity to understanding other people, which might be the harder engineering problem.

Kimi Antonelli could make history today. At just 20, he might become the youngest F1 championship driver ever. Toto Wolff built and manages the Mercedes team. On Cheeky Pint, he describes how he thinks about talent spotting. Two things stand out to me relative to startup talent spotting. (1) is we need the equivalent of cart racing for science and tech. Many think it's math olympiads or some high IQ shit but it's not. And (2) there is a similar connectedness to being in the driver seat, being one with the car and the road. From the episode, Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes F1 Race Team: “How do I spot a Kimi? I think when it comes to spotting racing drivers, you can judge pretty early on in a kid’s carting performance whether that kid has the potential to be a professional racing driver. Even with the tiny ones, you can identify the ones that are doing better than their peers. Either because they are younger–if someone who is 8 years-old beats the ones that are ten in that group, you can have those early signs of whether that kid has the potential. You can see when someone is comfortable in the cart, going 100 kilometers per hour…in the rain..and that kid does his first lap, and comes across the corner sideways…you know, there are the ingredients for being good at it.” “I don’t know what his metrics were when we was twelve” “Ingredients of success that you can’t measure: personality, how resilient are you to pressure, how much can you play the team game. When it comes to racing drivers, there are obviously similar KPIs–the stopwatch. The stopwatch never lies. Put them in the same car, the stopwatch is going to decide whether you are judged good or not. But underneath the stopwatch there needs to be the ability to set your car up in the right way, interact with the engineers, have some kind of social competence–making sure you have sponsors, treating them well. There have been extremely talented kids who never went anywhere because they were simply bad people. Or not intelligent enough. And then, there is the kind of overwhelming part, and that is called speed. What is speed? And all of your cognitive abilities and neuro-sensors, the sheer billions of sensors that a human has that give you an ability that not many have–it’s actually to feel what the car does underneath the fuel. And you can see with the extraordinary drivers, they feel much more connected to the car on the road than anybody else. One example is an old friend, a driver of mine, Louis Hamilton. You have two axles. A front axle, a rear axle, and you have the chassis in between. And when you call a car…it understeers, it means when you turn the wheel and it goes straight. And that happens over the tires in the in the front axle. It’s pretty normal. But Louis once said something when talking about the car. “The car understeers from the front axle to where I sit.” But that’s the middle of the car! How can that understeer. The engineers couldn’t really identify what he meant. But that is what his body told him, his brain told him, what the car is doing. And if the driver is able to have that underlying layer of ability, then that becomes unbeatable. But that is genetics.” “Connectedness is the right word. It’s being one with the car. And with the road.”

RT @MTSlive: Xona CEO Brian Manning explains how he’s using the SpaceX playbook to build a GPS alternative once reserved for superpowers: "SpaceX is famous for the SpaceX algorithm, the process by which you design and build things. Step one is get rid of dumb requirements. All the same steps are things we’ve carried over into Xona." "Historically, GPS has been the realm of exclusively superpower governments." "The only entities that have ever built a satellite navigation system operating on a global scale are the US government, the European government, the Chinese government, the Russian government, and now Xona." @XonaSpace
