@IFAD: IFAD has launched a new three-year project to strengthen the long-term resilience and livelihoods of 4,000 herding families in
#Mongolia, helping them adapt to increasingly variable weather conditions while protecting their livestock and incomes.
As Mongolia’s summers become drier and winters harsher, herding families are facing increasing pressure on their livelihoods. In response, the project will invest in practical solutions to help them manage climate risks, protect productive assets and improve market access.
Funded by a US$2 million grant from the
@adaptationfund, the project will be managed by IFAD in partnership with the Office of the President of Mongolia and
@UNIDO.
“This project offers life-changing support – water closer to the pastures, early warning before a hard winter arrives, and a better opportunity and place to sell what they produce – so families can build their resilience to extreme weather shocks and continue making a living from herding,” said Nii Quaye-Kumah, IFAD Country Director for Mongolia.
Working in the two hardest-hit provinces, the project will build solar-powered water stations and small earth banks to capture and store rainwater, and establish flood-safe centres where herders can store, process and sell wool, hides and dairy products.
Through field schools, the project will also train 4,000 herders – at least 40% of them women – in pasture and livestock management, and connect a national database to early warning systems.
