    Yesterday was a sad day for the privacy of citizens in the European Union given the extension of #ChatControl 1.0, allowing for voluntary scanning of private communications. In light of yesterday's vote, we wanted to remind you that: Chat Control 1.0 is different from Chat Control 2.0 in that providers (like us at Tuta) are not forced to backdoor their end-to-end encryption for surveillance. At Tuta, if Chat Control 2.0 is passed we have two options: to move out of the EU or sue and fight it. As our CEO, Matthias Pfau has stated, we would sue and fight for people's privacy. Because for us, undermining end-to-end encryption is not an option.     Kort samengevat, hoe dreigt #ChatControl langs de achterdeur te worden binnengesmokkeld? ➡️ Sinds 2021 bestaat de zgn #VoluntaryChatControl verordening die platforms expliciet toestaat (maar niet verplicht) om, ondanks de GDPR, berichten te scannen op CSAM. Ook diensten met end-to-end encryptie. ➡️ Het Deense voorzitterschap legt nu een nieuw #ChatControl voorstel op tafel waarbij dergelijke 'vrijwillige' scanning afdwingbaar kan worden gemaakt, nadat hun laatste voorstel (gelukkig) onvoldoende steun vond. ➡️ Concreet zou het nieuwe voorstel aanbieders van berichtendiensten verplichten om 'alle redelijke maatregelen' te nemen om de risico's voor CSAM op hun platformen te beperken. Daarbij wordt een niet-limitatieve lijst maatregelen opgesomd waarvan "ten minste een deel of alle" moeten worden geïmplementeerd. In die lijst staat nu plots "het uitvoeren van de vrijwillige activiteiten onder Verordening (EU) 2021/1232," die fameuze #VoluntaryChatControl dus. ➡️ Belangrijk: #VoluntaryChatControl is niet beperkt tot beelden en weblinks, en gaat dus op sommige punten verder dan het vorige voorstel van het Deense voorzitterschap dat (geheel terecht) van tafel werd geveegd. ➡️ Het nieuwe voorstel wordt vandaag besproken op de 'Law Enforcement Working Party (Police)'.
