What about freedom? So, after some serious discussion, we chose the harder path — building everything we needed from scratch in Unity3D. It meant more effort, more bugs, and more late nights. But also full creative control over visuals, interface, and animation... #DeveloperNotes

At first, we planned to make Haruka entirely in chibi style — cute, ironic, and easy to work with. Artists were vibing, the programmer was putting scenes together, everything was going smoothly... until something unexpected happened. #DeveloperNotes

Simple, right? Engine done. But as we later found out, building a VN system from scratch meant we were only seeing the tip of a massive iceberg... #DeveloperNotes

#DeveloperNotes I have been updating our Discord with daily notes about @StarbeamOne #development and figured I should be posting here as well for awareness. I am currently developing an email policy story where we will require email addresses going forward. When I first started this four years ago I was super sensitive to getting someone's email for fear of ending up on @haveibeenpwned. In hindsight, this was a huge mistake and one of my bigger regrets -- namely that it's taken 2 weeks and counting to address. 😭 While we've managed to do pretty well thus far without requiring an email address, there are challenges. The obvious is support in case we need to contact the customer. @Crisp_im also does a good job of doing this with integrated email validation which was the first sign that I was off the trail with my design decision. Then there is security. We use Oauth2 for all our logins. I didn't want to have a bot farm sign up w/ username+pass and this was a huge story w/ OpenSea at one point and one I wanted to avoid. However, what happens when someone gets their Oauth2 suspended (as we had w/ @PutItInTheAI recently )? Well, unless they have used more than one Oauth2 connection to their account, they are hosed. Very painfully obvious now and another sign that I shouldn't have gone against the flow with this. Finally, there's freaking marketing. If someone is giving their email address it's an opportunity for them to sign up for our newsletter and keep in touch with them. 🤦‍♂️ I swear I am my own worst enemy at times when it comes to marketing and this is a good example. Once we have someone's email it makes it easier to sign up for other notifications as well once we have that in place. So now we have required email addresses underway for sb1. Note that we do already support email addresses but they have not been required. Yesterday I got the primary registration path completed for new users and that was the first big step. Today I will be working on getting the existing users attended to. If you are an existing user you will get a prompt to ask you for your email address upon login and will have to go through the process to register. If you have already registered an email address then this will not be done and your email address will be linked automatically for you. There's still a lot of work to be done probably 3-5 days but finally making some progress here and will be worth it once completed. This is a lengthy caffeinated post but going forward I will probably be lazy and copy/paste from what I am typing in Discord. 😅

So, the decision was made: freedom and a visual novel built from scratch. We created a bunch of interconnected scripts — for dialogues, events, cameras, music, backgrounds... And surprisingly — the structure worked. 🤔 #DeveloperNotes

We decided to create Episode 0. A prologue. And for that, we wanted to show the protagonist not just from first-person view, but also from the outside. That changed everything..#DeveloperNotes

A quick rant about #PTR Feedback: 90% of the time, when a player describes an in-game issue, the player is right, regardless if a developer agrees or not. This is a bitter pill to swallow for a developer. (1/3)

Inversely, 90% of the time, when a player suggests (a) solution(s) to said issue, he is incorrect about the solution, regardless if the player agrees or not. This is a bitter pill to swallow for the player. (2/3)

#Feedback is an attempt to solve the first issue while #DeveloperNotes are an attempt to aid the latter one. Feedback in a nutshell: ✅ 80% the issue ✅ 10% the consequences ✅ 10% possible solutions #PTR Feedback is not the stage to publish one's plethora of redesigns. (3/3)
