What do you say to your family when you don’t know if you’ll ever see them again? In February 2022, he told his wife and children the war had begun. Then he left as Russian forces advanced towards Kyiv, unsure what the coming hours would bring. This is President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russian ballistic missiles struck the grounds of a university in Kyiv and the area around it – effectively the campus, Kyoto Park, the area near a metro station, and residential buildings. The exact number of casualties is not yet known. But tragically, there are victims. There are people injured. Rescue operations are underway. There is extensive damage, and there are also reports that people may be trapped under the rubble. All emergency services are at the scene and doing their work – saving lives. The missiles hit very crowded areas, and there is not a single military facility nearby. This was a strike directly on the city, on its infrastructure. Unfortunately, there may be more strikes coming. The attack with “shaheds” is also continuing – against Kyiv and our other cities and communities. In the last four or five years we have discussed the use of nuclear weapons more than I have in the previous fifty years combined.Russia has rejected peace talks. They do not want to negotiate with Zelensky because every time we approach a ceasefire or any real discussion about ending this war, Ukraine attacks Russian energy infrastructure. Then comes the tit for tat. Then the cycle continues. The longer this goes on, the closer we get to the unthinkable. There is no such thing as a tactical nuclear weapon. Once that line is crossed, everything changes. Who fires first, Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, or someone else? We are playing with fire, and the consequences will not stay contained to Eastern Europe.This has to stop. Endless escalation is not a strategy. Real negotiations without constant provocations are the only way to avoid a disaster none of us want to see.

Now we all need to focus on making these meetings happen – together with America, Europe, and all our partners. Can they happen without America or without American pressure on Russia? Probably not. That’s why we are really counting on America to keep this a priority at every level.
